Automating Artwork Prep: How Kwality Labels relies on an automated workflow to prepare artwork for print

by Mike Agness, Courtesy of PRINTACTION

As with the variety of specifications faced on a daily basis for packaging, the preparation of artwork for labels and packaging differs from job to job.

Historically, prepress departments, either manually or with the help of automated workflow systems, have resolved several challenges. They include tasks such as:

  • Preflighting: Assuring artwork file is ready to be printed.
  • Colour management: Matching colour appearances as closely as possible from input to output and between devices, assuring colours will be printed as specified.
  • Trapping: With traditional presses, assuring there are no gaps between type or images of different colours. Additionally, in flexo printing, consideration is given to keep aways or hold backs where required.
  • Step and repeat: Determining the most efficient way to print jobs on press.

As these differ from converter to converter, the best way to illustrate how to consider file preparation would be to start from the beginning.

A PDF editor and cloud-based dashboard have automated many of the company’s prepress tasks.

Ground zero

Kwality Labels, owned by Shanti Chadha and based in Richmond Hill, Ont., began more than 40 years ago as a narrow web commercial flexo label printer. They have since expanded capabilities to include custom digital label printing for both long and short print runs. These include pressure sensitive, cut and stack, and double- sided labels, along with products like spirals. They offer a full range of products and services for their clients from industries like health, cosmetics, juice, and snack foods. Kwality Labels complies with several industry standards and has certifications such as G7, FTA FIRST, and IFS PACsecure, allowing them to achieve premium quality for everyone.

When Randy McDonnell joined Kwality Labels in 2019, they outsourced all prepress. After client approval, plates showed up and they ran the job. McDonnell, along with plant manager Joe Miller, were tasked with building a prepress department from scratch using a PDF editor.

“I always heard the rationale for using a PDF editor, but never understood it. Since I worked previously with Adobe Illustrator, I never had real workflow experience. In the very early days here at Kwality Labels, I did the work first in Illustrator, then moved the files into the PDF editor,” remembers McDonnell. “Now that I know how to use the workflow, I realized that I could process a file better and faster entirely with the PDF editor. If I’m spending eight hours on one file or on a series of SKUs in the editor, I’m going to spend much longer in Illustrator to accomplish the same.”

McDonnell gets artwork files from both ends of the spectrum. Once someone has edited a file, particularly for flexo, the struggle is getting both print runs to look the same.

“Consider a job that requires five designs—one new, but four repeated from last year. It’s easy to use last year’s file and tweak the text. But if there’s a new flavour or SKU this year, I’ll get a new design file,” says McDonnell. “How do I ensure the design file matches the ones I’ve already printed—and maybe not even by me, but someone else? That would be a challenge without a good workflow.”

The other issue is flexo vs. digital. Kwality Labels has digital HD and flexo presses. “We’re not going to run 5,000 or fewer labels on a flexo press. But I need to mimic its print quality on the digital press. Conversely, customers may order a print job of 5,000 labels today that we will print on a digital press—and may order 100,000 tomorrow, which we will print on a flexo press. The challenge, of course, is to match colour between presses.”

There are different ink and colour settings to be considered. This is where colour management comes into play. McDonnell relies on the CXF value of the Pantone colour, which includes the LAB value and the spectral data (essentially lighting conditions, as a package on the shelf looks different from a package under freezer lighting).

At times, McDonnell extends the print gamut by utilizing orange, green and violet.

“One of the tests of a better workflow, particularly when you want to colour manage it to expanded gamut, is the ability to convert everything: CMYK images, RGB images and others. Some just convert the Pantone or vector components. The more sophisticated systems apply it to all images,” explains McDonnell.

Step and repeat

The way Kwality Labels automatically steps and repeats jobs is innovative.

“We’re pulling the information from an updated database. For example, with nutraceuticals, there are about 40 different sized bottles and labels that we typically print. We input those sizes into an automated dashboard,” mentions McDonnell. “Once the customer okays the one-up, the system automatically finds that size in the database, and locates the step and repeats. We just say ‘go’, and we’ve got a stepped file sitting at the digital press to print—or RIPped to a 1-bit tiff file for plates.”

“The old way to send files for approval was via a low-res PDF. The problem is, what will you use as a viewer? Many people rely on a browser. Even the free version of Adobe Acrobat presents problems if settings are incorrect. Some customers might say, ‘Why does the type look fat?’ It’s because we put a trap on the type and it’s being looked at with the overprint off,” remarks McDonnell. “Now, if we try to send one of our larger clients a low-res PDF, they won’t even open the email message. It has to be approved via our online portal. The viewer on the automated dashboard forces everyone to view literally the same file, with the same rendering. Customers can leave notes on the file or on certain areas of the image. We just collect the notes and make a new version.”

Future plans

Kwality Labels’ future plan is to tie its MIS into their plate-ordering jobs. They can already automate the digital press front end (DFE). If a job is approved in digital form, it just goes to DFE and RIPs automatically at the correct settings. Preparing jobs automatically for flexo printing will take more work.

“If you’re still preparing your print production files with Adobe apps, you’re like the film stripper in 1990s, when desktop publishing was taking hold. Yes, you could do everything with film stripping. But at a certain point, it didn’t matter how good you were. Technology has changed,” concludes McDonnell. “There’s also a big change in PDF editing technology, and those who rely on other tools could be left behind.”

La Commerciale S.r.l of Alba is a graphic industry with over seventy years of experience in the field of labels: for a more agile work process and to increase safety, efficiency and reduce errors, the company, on the basis of its CERM management software, uses the native PACKZ PDF editor and CLOUDFLOW workflow by HYBRID Software for the entire traditional and digital process phase.

Founded in 1945 by Cesare Artuffo as a small printing shop in the central Via Vittorio Emanuele in Alba (CN), La Commerciale has always invested in new technologies with the aim of guaranteeing the highest quality and speed of delivery to the end customer. The company started from lead characters, experimented with photocomposition techniques and used the first computers for video layout and digital graphics. Finally, with the entry into the company of Mauro and Paolo Artuffo, La Commerciale acquired the most efficient sheet and web offset printing, hybrid and digital technique, as well as the best graphics software on the market. The customer is always at the center: with him, in very close synergy, a relationship of professionalism, consultancy and availability is established, from the initial idea to execution.

Recent years have seen the addition of Federica, Stefano and Carolina Artuffo to the company, the fourth generation of a story that began seventy years earlier. “La Commerciale, about forty employees, works with extreme operational flexibility, because thanks to the considerable experience accumulated over the years it is always able to intervene on the job, finding innovative and highly quality solutions and with immediate response times”, says Federica.

A look behind the curtains in La Commerciale’s production hall.

Technologies and production

La Commerciale is equipped with UV offset printing systems for self-adhesive labels. The three Gallus TCS 250 machines for adhesive labels are hybrid with various finishing options such as hot foil, dry embossing, flexo varnishing and screen printing. Furthermore, there is a digital printing department dedicated to small and medium runs that allows the printing of spot colors through the use of hexachromy and opaque white in line. The two HP Indigo 6K digital printing machines are intgrated with two ABG Digicon Series 3 finishing machines, also equipped with numerous sections for finishing. In 2023, a new machine was introduced, Mida LI220, capable of producing multi-layer labels, even with different materials, multi-page labels and anti-counterfeiting labels equipped with RFID and other systems. The flagship of La Commerciale is in fact the precision and quality of printing and finishing, monitored through 100% final control systems. Furthermore, the company is equipped with a very advanced graphic and prepress department able to advise and guide both from a creative and technical point of view. A mock-up department has been associated with it, capable of providing the customer with a true prototype of his label for any evaluations on colors, selected substrate and processing before serial production. In fact, enhancements are possible even in the mock-up phase thanks to recent investments in the digital field.

The reference markets

80% of the customer portfolio includes companies in the wine sector located throughout Italy, followed by the remaining 20% which includes companies in the spirits, beer, confectionery and food sectors, all companies that invest heavily in communication and their product. The constant aspect is always the search for improvement and adaptation to the high standards required by the customer. This is possible only thanks to continuous investments in technology and information technology and the training of highly qualified personnel which allows to improve company productivity.

Federica Artuffo uses the Proofscope module within CLOUDFLOW to ensure the wine label artwork is optimized for print.

Personalization in the prepress workflow: the partnership with HYBRID Software

The company has always believed in process automation in order to simplify operations and limit operator errors, allowing them to concentrate on the most important activities. “Since the pre-press process represents a crucial phase of our workflow on which depends the positive outcome of the entire label production process, especially in recent years in which we are focusing heavily on digital printing, arose the need to have an editor that would allow to work on the pdf file provided by the customer or graphic studio without altering its characteristics and allow the customer himself to be able to approve exactly the pdf file that would go to print. PACKZ by HYBRID Software from this point of view represented the turning point for us as a native pdf editor. After having embraced the philosophy behind this editor, we could not help but move towards the CLOUDFLOW workflow proposed by HYBRID Software, installed three years ago”, explains Federica. These are incredibly customizable workflows able to adapt to the most particular needs.

“The relationship with La Commerciale began 10 years ago, when they bought PACKZ, software then updated over time, and they immediately appreciated the concept behind this product, i.e. being able to work on the file without converting it, but not only, since they use digital printing it is essential to understand the behavior of the colors well”, says Luca Rossi, regional manager Italy of HYBRID Software. With the Proofscope Viewer tool, integrated with CLOUDFLOW workflows, it is possible to preview the PDF file and inspect it by viewing its transparencies and overprints of the same colors that will be printed on the press.

“This is really important in the label sector where there are often overprints, opaque inks, which perhaps need to have a black background with gold writing underneath and the possibility of seeing the opaque color is particularly useful because today the files are very complex and heavy and therefore to show them to the customer they are manipulated and broken up, creating possible problems and discrepancies, with Proofscope it is possible to share exactly the print file for approval”, adds Rossi. “This creates a smoother and safer process and the operators feel also safer, in fact they are very satisfied with using PACKZ, which among other things also allows the comparison between two files to understand if there have been any changes, these tools have had significant repercussions on customers, i.e. the drastic reduction of errors”, confirms Federica.

CLOUDFLOW workflow is flexible and can be integrated and can create customized interfaces, with different access methods, allowing the operator to view only the necessary data, obviously in continuous connection with the management system.

For example, with the online approval by the customer, it is possible to proceed immediately towards production, implementing an advanced integration between CLOUDFLOW and the company management system. “The effectiveness of this system is linked above all to the high degree of customization possible because we have managed to integrate different interfaces for prepress and press operators, who have different needs, so everyone has the data they need to work better; obviously the operators have been trained for this new way of working, change scares us but we want to continue with innovation and therefore we accompany them in their training and growth”, says Federica.

HYBRID Software support goes beyond technical support

“HYBRID Software works a lot not only on technical training but also on production support, so while the operator works, one of our technicians suggests the best solution, to make the most of the installed technology and adapt it perfectly to the customer’s company size”, says Luca and Federica adds that “the service represented another fundamental element of our choice: we felt supported at every stage, from installation to subsequent implementation, even of customized flows; we are very satisfied and we look forward to seeing future developments, which include an integration of systems dedicated to color management of the German Color Logic, which has been part of HYBRID Software since 2021”.

VN Reproduktion & Kommunikation GmbH is an owner-operated prepress house offering final artwork and repro service for brand owners and offset and flexo printers. The German based company delivers their customers creative packaging design, adaptation design and reproduction specifically implemented for the respective printing process. VN Repro has been creating artwork for folding cartons and cardboard boxes, outer cartons, displays, flexible packaging as well as labels for 30 years.

The Reason to Change Software Systems

As artwork for folding carton and displays becomes increasingly more complex, processing such orders without the right software becomes directly as difficult. Importing data manually is time-consuming and not to mention error prone. With their previous tool, VN Repro was not being supplied an evolving tool that was up to date with the printing requirements for print data preparation.

VN Repro needed a tool that was adept to support their daily processes and create print-ready exports from their proprietary system. It became clear that with ever-increasing demands on quality and timing, the need for productive software was the key to success in the future.

VN Repro needed a modern tool for data processing; a software that would support the modernization of their prepress department. They found this in the PDF editor, PACKZ, the establishment of a PDF workflow, and later, with reliable processes and customer collaboration in CLOUDFLOW.

“With HYBRID Software, we can meet the constantly growing requirements in terms of quality and deadlines.”

Ensuring a New Software Becomes Accepted

It is not always easy to change systems, it requires invested time and the team’s acceptance. VN Repro had the correct approach: by implementing HYBRID Software gradually, the prepress team was given time to get used to new processes and become convinced themselves of the potential efficiencies to be gained. After feedback was gathered, the optimal PACKZ workflow was introduced. VN Repro customers were also taken along on the journey from the beginning to minimize concern of errors from their side.

The PACKZ Advantage

Finally, the software was up to the mark: stable performance, complex PDF handling, including trapping and automation of instant color space and image resolution checks upon opening the PDF. Artwork from InDesign, for example, could suddenly be processed directly from within PDF, which significantly increased productivity in the repro phase.

“With PACKZ, we have found a powerful PDF editor that allows us to optimally prepare complex artwork for offset or flexo printing.”

Significant Improvement in Repro Productivity Through

  • High performance software
  • Innovative automation tools in PACKZ PDF editor
  • Simple, efficient preparation of Adobe artwork for repro
  • Strong quality control with PDF comparison and Analyze and Correct
  • Historic transfer of previous jobs to PDF was easily achievable

However, the desire for further automations was now sparked, especially since they were dealing with shorter and shorter time to market deadlines.

VN Repro was interested in CLOUDFLOW for improved data exchange and communication with customers. A download portal was created for less manual data provision and necessary data to be generated from a complete document, including HighRes/LowRes PDF, Proof PDF, finishing, and more. Automations were added for barcode creation, the optimization of PDFs, and in the output process. Print data customization became a breeze with automatic retrieval and inclusion of customer’s unique number of licenses and logos filling in automatically.

Potentials Unleashed Through CLOUDFLOW Include

  • Innovative automation tools in CLOUDFLOW such as Live Objects and Pactions
  • Increased productivity and process reliability
  • Many manual data transfers have been automated so that operators have more time for their actual tasks
  • New employees can be trained much faster due to high automation.

“With PACKZ and CLOUDFLOW, we were able to automate many recurring activities and improve our workflows. This increases our process reliability and creates freed up time that we can use for tasks that rely on our prepress expertise.”

Plans for the future?

Future goals include the extension of Proofscope for digital approval processes and quality management. This will provide the prepress team further quality improvements through PDF comparison in CLOUDFLOW’s browser-based app.

VN Repro is currently in the testing phase in their CTP department for digital printing plate production. By utilizing HYBRID Software for their existing plate production workflows, their goal is to harmonize internal production processes and increase flexibility as well for this division.

Powerful, cloud-based automation at Asteria Group France

To optimise the productivity and efficiency of its French operations, Asteria Group has opted for the SaaS solution from HYBRID Software, MyCLOUDFLOW.

In just a few years, a European leader in label printing has emerged in West Flanders through organic growth and acquisitions. Asteria Group, which has embarked on a rapid international growth process centred on the company Accent in Gullegem (near Kortrijk), currently has 32 sites in ten countries, with a total of about 1800 employees!

“A European business with strong, local roots in every country where we are active”, is how Ives Declerck, the CEO of Asteria Group, defines it. “We work for both SMEs and multinationals, mainly in the food, beverage, cosmetics and home care sectors etc. And we have one golden rule: ‘we think before we print’. That means we invest time and resources in being able to offer a ‘first time right’ approach. Delivering labels is about so much more than the end product alone. What information needs to appear on the labels? What image does our customer want to project? Sustainability, luxury or traceability? Context-driven communication about consumption is what it’s all about. Thanks to our approach, we can guarantee short delivery times and flexibility without compromising on quality and precision. The key to what we do is also deploying our best resources where they are needed.”

Powerful, cloud-based automation
As a long-term HYBRID Software customer and user of the PACKZ prepress editor, the Asteria Group has decided to take the next step towards automating its prepress processes in France. With the introduction of MyCLOUDFLOW, Asteria is benefiting from an advanced SaaS solution that centralises and streamlines the prepress workflows from all its French sites. This solution does not require a physical server. As a result, the IT investments are minimal, and implementation is flexible and effortless.

Production workflow with seamless integration
MyCLOUDFLOW enables Asteria to extract technical information from incoming artwork files, which is essential for generating quotations. It also offers them a simple way of checking files in advance, making changes with the advanced PACKZ artwork editor and implementing approval workflows with online collaboration, which helps them get it ‘first time right’ more often and reduces the time-to-market. Furthermore, MyCLOUDFLOW is integrated with the ERP system CERM, which is especially designed for the label sector and enables a seamless data and status exchange.

“In the future, we want to extend the workflow, because we want to take advantage of that flexibility between our sites, and HYBRID offers us the ideal solution for that. We can automate almost everything, which means we can complete assignments more quickly and reduce the risk of errors. That will bring us closer to our goal: offering our customers solutions and ‘thinking before we print’. Automation will enable us to work even more efficiently and give our employees more time to respond to customers’ questions and cope with our future growth.” – Christophe Beke, Chief Technology Innovation Officer.

Flexibility, scalability and security
MyCLOUDFLOW gives Asteria the flexibility to reduce the number of licences it needs, since a single system supports several operations. Additionally, the prepress operator is no longer limited to a single location: instead, he or she can work at any location and at any time.

HYBRID Software keeps MyCLOUDFLOW up and running in the most optimal state, including back-ups and security. This reduces Asteria’s need for IT resources, freeing up the team to concentrate on their core activities without having to worry about infrastructure and maintenance.

MyCLOUDFLOW has transformed the way the Asteria Group manages its operations in France. With this cloud-based solution, Asteria has increased its productivity, minimised its IT investments and implemented an efficient, integrated workflow that enables it to cope with growing demand. MyCLOUDFLOW has proved that it is an essential tool for pioneering businesses in the packaging and label printing sector, such as the Asteria Group.

Laura Grondey, who is Managing Director of Siemer Verpackung GmbH together with her sister Maren Grondey, takes us behind the scenes of our work together:

“Since taking over the business in its fourth generation in 2011, we have developed a clear vision for the further development of Siemer Verpackung as a medium-sized, owner-managed company. The realignment of our internal prepress plays a central role in this, in order to increase efficiency, security and capacities there and to establish a stable digital process.

A thorough analysis of the prepress processes clearly showed that there was a need for action. After creating new competencies through personnel expansion, we researched innovative, technical solutions for the digital prepress process.

Our first contact with HYBRID Software at PRO.PACKAGING 2022 immediately piqued our interest. Their focus on efficiency and value creation in digital prepress made HYBRID the perfect partner for us in the technical renovation of our prepress. In addition to the innovative technologies, HYBRID’s many years of expertise quickly convinced us.

A logical, first measure to realize our goals was the introduction of PACKZ as a “Swiss army knife” for prepress. This software solution proved to be a key factor in significantly improving automation and efficiency in our prepress operations and laying the foundations for the following steps. Thanks to PACKZ’s intuitive features and flexibility, we were able to successfully renovate our established but aging ways of working and adapt them to the current demands of the market.

We have recognized that a successful future also requires comprehensive digitalization. Therefore, further measures in the area of our digitalization are already being planned. We want to optimize our processes so that we can respond more flexibly, quickly and effectively to the needs of our customers.”

Our German/Austria/Switzerland team has toured 6 cities in the region during the last few weeks to gather impulses from packaging professionals directly and share new innovations in our software. Thank you to all our guests for the countless inspiring conversations.

Enjoy below impressions from the event, and a customer testimonial from PRO.PACKAGING attendee Idriss Brockmann-Serbis, who is CEO & Sustainable Digital Transformation Consultant at NightlyCode.

He reflects: “Thanks to the team of HYBRID Software for the very successful PRO.PACKAGING 2023. The program, but also the exchange with other users of HYBRID solutions was particularly valuable. In no web conference can so many experiences be exchanged so intensively and in such a short time.

Once again HYBRID Software proved that they understand the requirements and challenges of the printing and packaging industry correctly. In my view, HYBRID’s solutions are and will remain the absolute reference in terms of facilitation and automation for prepress. Performant and absolutely practical. The functions and innovations presented at PRO.PACKAGING 2023 have confirmed this once again.

The fact that HYBRID is now expanding its offering with MyCLOUDFLOW to include a SaaS model was, in my opinion, a logical step and absolutely overdue: Now the story is simply complete. This means that companies can finally focus on the essentials and make progress in the production process instead of racking their brains over IT issues.

For me, it has been confirmed that HYBRID is the right partner for professional software solutions in the printing and packaging industry. And they understand how important it is to gather the right people. I am already looking forward to the next collaboration!”

Geostick automates prepress processes with HYBRID Software

Greater efficiency, processes that are less susceptible to errors and, above all, a better customer experience: these were Geostick’s ambitions when it approached HYBRID Software to discuss process automation. Eighteen months later, implementation is complete and the high expectations have been met.

As a manufacturer and supplier of self-adhesive labels and flexible packaging, Geostick is one of the most important label printers in Europe. The family business will be celebrating its centenary next year and has ambitions for further growth. The plan to increase automation and streamline the workflow in the prepress department was partly motivated by this ambition to grow.

“We wanted greater automation in the workflow, for everything that happens between receiving the artwork from the customer and printing the image or file,” says Cees Schouten, who is responsible for operations at the family business along with his son Tom. “At the same time, we also wanted to improve the customer experience and improve the security of the information and changes to soft proofs.”

Far-reaching integration process
In HYBRID Software, Geostick found a partner who offered more than just the solutions to their automation needs. The software company also brought customer-focused collaboration to an integration process that ended up taking more than a year.

“This is a far-reaching project that involves considering all our processes and questioning everything,” Tom Schouten says. “All our in-house knowledge and experience had to be incorporated into the processes. Doing that meant we also stumbled upon things that had been done in a certain way for years, but no one remembered why. We’ve streamlined all of that now. We also need to thank our customers for their cooperation and patience, because the project has had a considerable impact on them as well. But it has brought them many benefits too!”

The new solution is centred on CLOUDFLOW, HYBRID Software’s advanced server application. Specific drivers were also supplied for Geostick’s HP and Bobst digital presses, so that the start of a new task is also largely automated at the machines themselves. HYBRID has also developed specific tools for the automatic creation of step and repeat prints and complex multi-layer labels.

Besides the server application, the prepress operators also use the PACKZ desktop editor to streamline and simplify their work.

Dialogue through web-based solution
However, the automation of the entire process surrounding the actual DTP work is what has had the biggest impact on customers and staff. For example, there is a Sales Pre-flight module that makes it possible to generate quotes more quickly. The most striking change is the web-based solution that streamlines collaboration between the customers and prepress department staff.

“In the past, e-mails were written manually with the PDF documents attached. Sometimes reminders had be sent and people had to search for the replies,” Tom Schouten explains. “Now a link is sent automatically, which the customers can use to view the files in high resolution. If necessary, they can contact prepress directly and, once everything is in order, approve the document using the system.”

Integration with CERM MIS software
This new way of working has made a huge improvement to the customer experience, and susceptibility to errors has been greatly reduced. The entire process is also embedded in a bigger picture, thanks to the integration with the existing CERM MIS software that HYBRID Software provided.

“The whole process felt a bit like open-heart surgery because of the very radical changes it entailed,” Cees Schouten reflects. But just like a successful operation, it has given the business a new lease of life. Geostick wasted no time putting its increased efficiency to the test. In July 2022, it took over a printing works that increased the company’s turnover by 12% without needing extra people in the prepress department. “That’s what the automation process has done for us.”

Looking ahead
Now that Geostick has a taste for automation and streamlining, it is enthusiastic to continue its partnership with HYBRID. “We have come on in leaps and bounds, which we are extremely proud of, but we haven’t exhausted the possibilities yet. We are working on an even more accessible approval process for our customers, and we are already looking forward to several great applications that HYBRID is developing,” Tom Schouten reveals. This year, Geostick will continue to optimise the process internally, in collaboration with HYBRID developers. According to Cees Schouten, that is what a partnership is all about: “The focus needs to be on connectedness and sustainable partnerships.”

Lauterbach Group’s Tony Tyler

Mike Agness, HYBRID Software Executive Vice President, Americas. While we all talk about and explore the ways technology allows us to be better businesses and converters, we can lose too much human interaction. When that happens, some of the improvements we’ve explored may be counter-productive. The Lauterbach Group strongly believes that speaking person to person – backed with a robust technology system – is the most effective way to operate.

Headquartered in Sussex, WI, USA, the Lauterbach Group manufactures high-quality product labels and converting for a wide range of customer uses, from food/beverage to product security and authentication.

Through its OmniMark Management System, the Lauterbach Group strives to alleviate touch points. It does that by providing digital asset warehousing, product art and design, project management, and quality control systems. This makes clients’ jobs easier, more efficient, and helps bring products to market quicker.

“We are very focused on our employees, whom we call group members,” emphasizes Shane Lauterbach, president. “We try to create an environment to generate value for our group members so they can create value for themselves. In doing so, they generate value for our clients.”

Making person-to-person more efficient than email-to-email

Lauterbach wants to make it easy for people to do business with them, using an operating model that’s built on standardization of materials, process, and specifications. It’s built on speed, quality, differentiation, and decoration – the excellent value they can provide, with all their embellishments.

The Lauterbach Group believes that a complete, effective automation process excluding manual transactional work provides more time to connect to people, getting jobs done quicker. “We want to use technology to work with people on a solutions level. The world needs to be more connected personally,” says Lauterbach. “Rather than using solely email back and forth to communicate, we’ve got to pick up the phone and say, ‘How can I help you?’ I just think our industry has to make the process easier for clients. By talking to them online or on the phone, we help them improve their businesses, providing new products that could generate value for them.

“We need to perform at a very high tactical level to generate a result in the future,” adds Lauterbach. “We’re not big KPI people from a goal perspective, but at the activity level. We look at a goal as ‘What’s next?’ Rather than a multi-year plan, we develop a one-year operating plan. That allows us to pivot, react, and adapt faster.”

High-quality proofing is still a significant part of the process, but Lauterbach wants to remove the time-wasting back and forth process. “Think about how many times via email you discuss fonts, traps, or colors,” considers Lauterbach. “If we can discuss that together personally in 30 minutes, everybody’s better off.”

The customer still gets a reliable, physical proof, but it’s the final result. Lauterbach doesn’t want to add people to do just prepress or client service work. They want to take everyone’s talents and utilize them at the client level. One of the things they’re also trying to resolve is the work-from-home process for non-pressroom manufacturing people. The fundamental challenge is connectivity and learning. “How do you teach when you can’t walk out to the pressroom and show how something’s done?,” asks Lauterbach.

Technology still makes it all possible

Both flexo and digital are important to Lauterbach. “Digital technology has moved to a tipping point where we have to automate all of these workflows,” suggests Lauterbach. “We’re going to draw flexo with us, but the workflows are first being built around digital.”

Lauterbach operates two 20″ flexo presses and two 13″ presses that are nine and 10 colors. Originally, Lauterbach had problems connecting to its MIS software and communicating with customers. “HYBRID Software was the first cornerstone of our automated world. We want to automate all transactional workflows to assure that our group members can spend their time with our clients,” notes Lauterbach. “The HYBRID Software system is just more open and easier to integrate. Our first step was to bring in HP, Label Traxx, HYBRID Software and our own development team to re-imagine our concept. They looked at what we were doing and suggested ways to automate to deliver more dedicated time to converse with clients.”

Lauterbach has just finished the first step of commercialization. The Lauterbach Group calls its front-end system OmniMark, where they connect with clients, providing both sales generation and sales order processes. This also includes asset management where the converter houses clients’ art. The company has processes where it will integrate projects with clients online. When done, customers hit the OK button, and the job goes to press. HYBRID Software’s open architecture is aligned to Lauterbach’s HP Indigo presses: an 8000 press, 6K, and a new 25K. They also work with Label Traxx Siteline software as the CSR customer portal front-end system.

The result: ease and effective use by both staff and customers. Employees are excited about the speed and the ease in which Lauterbach can develop workflows.

“Customers also find our system easy. We’ve completed the implementation phase and are now into iterations, working with two core clients who are finding great value in the simplicity to get proofs or return approvals,” comments Lauterbach. “They can easily look at different SKUs – or even repeat orders with changes – and understand what was done. We’re literally eliminating time from their days so that they can focus on other things.”

These two clients have many SKUs with, typically, medium-run jobs, but Lauterbach will occasionally receive orders for as many as 20 products with a run length of 100,000 feet. “Trying to manage the SKUs and the art is fundamentally different with every order,” explains Lauterbach. “By setting them up so we see them properly – and the sequencing in our automated system – the number of issues have diminished tremendously. We’ve worked at this for a few weeks, but we’re already seeing massive increases in efficiency just because of the way the production workflow organizes the work and passes it on to the ERP system.”

Lauterbach had a job that was completely variable print utilizing the HP SmartStream Collage personalization process. “They’re challenging to set up, but with our new system, working with the digital press, the latest job printed with no issues at all,” remarks Lauterbach. “With more simplicity, you can go faster. The automation also delivers higher quality. Then we add our greatly differentiated embellishment, which becomes simpler, too.”

Looking to the future

In 2023 Lauterbach will be reimagining its entire online ordering process. To date, it has been created only for stock products, but the converter is going to integrate improvements into OmniMark for custom packaging, shrink, and label products.

“We’re working very hard at expanding our footprint, but in a way that all client interactions, ordering and selling is done in our main facility. It’s a hub and spoke approach where we are setting up microcells to deliver speed to the market, removing logistical challenges out of the process. These spokes could be geographic, or different types of business units. For example, we invested in the HP Indigo 25K so we can run both flexo and digital shrink at wider formats,” says Lauterbach. “Once the automated tool set eliminates transactional work, people can help people.”

Lauterbach’s system provides an open mind and open architecture; the willingness to find different ways to bring innovation. “In our world it’s speed, quality and embellishment,” summarizes Lauterbach. “It’s easy to use and develop value-added parts, whether that’s integration with other systems, training new people, or helping clients so they see how easy it is for them to save time and generate value.

“I’m a big believer that technology exists for us to connect. But I also think technology can be a barrier if you don’t let people help people,” concludes Lauterbach. “How you use technology and how it supports transactional work is extremely important. We need people talking to people just for basic humanity, development and support. Those are not small problems to get your arms around in a macro environment, but we believe in that concept very strongly.”

While print production software is well established and fully functional, what isn’t is the interconnectivity between production and MIS systems. DWS Printing & Packaging is a good example of how a reassessment can be helpful.

Founded in 1865 and based in Deer Park, NY, DWS Printing & Packaging employs 50 people, and focuses primarily on food and beverage packaging, with a strong presence in the craft beer market. Its goal is to deliver the best possible products and service for its customers.

With its offset, flexo, and digital+flexo hybrid presses, DWS can provide any type of label a package requires, including tactile treatments, up to 10 colors with full UV technology, and specialty stocks. A new facility in Austin, TX led to a second hybrid press. The company also prints shrink sleeves, complemented by in-house application onto cans. They are in the process of using their newly installed IC3D software, pending training.

“We were happy with our pretty functional workflow system, but it could not tie properly into our FileMaker MIS system. After struggling for months, we decided to start to look at options,” says John Gulino, COO, DWS.

Because DWS prints offset, flexo, and digital — and gang-run printing — it built a FileMaker system that was geared specifically for their business. The only limitation was integrating it into its existing automated workflow engine. All the information typed into its MIS system had to be manually re-entered into its automation system. While soft proofing was already functional, the promise of tying to the MIS interested DWS most. It was still manually sending out PDFs for customer approval. Clients were approving projects via email, which were manually triggered into the workflow to continue the process.

DWS was shown the HYBRID CLOUDFLOW automated workflow. The possibilities were immediately obvious.

“Now, when we receive a new job, CSRs enter data to the MIS, and it’s imported into the production system. The label information — the size, press, colors, dye number, substrate, coatings, shipping, etc. — can trigger actions,” notes Gulino. “The workflow drives the job. The automated process changes the preflighting parameters; what’s acceptable, what passes, and what fails. It minimizes the number of touch points.”

It even works remotely. All the CSR, artwork, and platemaking for the Austin facility is done at headquarters. When Austin conducts press approvals or looks at scheduling, they are tied into the same corporate DWS workflow and MIS. “It was remarkably simple. The box arrived with the software. I plugged it into our network, HYBRID logged in, tweaked it, and it was up and running,” says Gulino. “The Austin facility could be down the hall or across the country.

“We tried to determine how to organize our sales team’s estimates. HYBRID Software said, ‘Let us think about it.’ Within a couple days, they built a Web form that looked exactly like our existing estimating software,” says Gulino. “Within a week, it was tested and functional. Sales reps can log in and see the status of their estimates. They can forward them to CSRs who can take the estimates and tie them into sales orders and invoices.

“Within a few months of using our new workflow, I am getting excellent buy-in from the entire company. Print buyers also appreciate the functionality, the annotation, and the online proofing. It’s more seamless — easier for them, and faster for us. It’s certainly worth looking at connecting your ERP with your production system. It did what HYBRID Software said it would do,” says Gulino.

FlexoPlatte reflects on acquiring CLOUDFLOW during Expográfica 2022

FlexoPlatte, headed by Ferel Garay in Guadalajara, Mexico, has become a recognized company in the prepress, flexography and packaging segment, thanks to its continuous commitment to technology and high quality. During Expográfica 2022 earlier this year, they acquired CLOUDFLOW, our modular production workflow package for file processing, asset management, soft proofing, and workflow automation. The web-based platform is a dedicated packaging application with support for PDF, separations, trapping, screening, color proofing, and more.

Ferel Garay, Operations Manager from FlexoPlatte shares, “As a trade shop, integration is key. HYBRID Software solutions have allowed us to communicate with our customers efficiently and securely, helping us to be more effective and reliable; we have found them to be powerful tools with an excellent cost-benefit ratio.”

Working together with Gráfica GX

Carlos Arizpe, Sales Director LATAM at HYBRID Software remembers, “When we started this project with FlexoPlatte, together with our channel Grafica GX, we knew the level of demand of the client, their extensive knowledge, and the care for their processes. They presented us with the challenge which they wanted to solve. We worked closely with them during the implementation of our solution in their workflow. What they have achieved in such a short time is the result of the work that FlexoPlatte, the channel, and we put together to solve the challenge. We are very satisfied with the outcome of added efficiencies and improved processes.”

Gráfica GX is focused on offering solutions for the packaging industry, specifically focusing on flexo solutions. General Manager Ricardo Xoconoxtle remarks, “We found HYBRID Software’s technology convincing immediately. Digi-Paq, a commercial printer based in Kortemark, Belgium, has been using HYBRID Software’s PACKZ and CLOUDFLOW solutions for a year now. Digi-Paq’s managing director Stefaan Parrein says: “The number of manual interventions in the upstream process – taking orders, approving them and preparing them for the print queue – has dropped so much that we are doing twice as much work as before, and with the same team.

Digi-Paq began in 2017 by offering rolls of self-adhesive labels printed exclusively digitally, which makes this very young company quite unique. Its machine fleet consists of three Screen Truepress Jet UV inkjet presses with inline finishing systems. The gap in the market was real, as evidenced by its growth figures and the number of employees, which has since increased to over 20. Digi-Paq serves a customer base that ranges from local SMEs to top international companies. The company is also BRC-certified and serves customers from the chemical industry to the food sector.

Growing pains
However, rapid growth often leads to a few teething problems. Digi-Paq has not escaped this either, admits Stefaan Parrein: “Digital printing technology has made us very responsive. We deliver within a week, or even within a day if we really need to. The upstream process was still manageable in the beginning, but with the demand, we eventually reached our limits. Too much time was being wasted checking files, making changes if necessary, and waiting for the customer to give the green light. After a thorough study, we decided to trust HYBRID as the best solution.”

Connection with CERM
Digi-Paq chose a full HYBRID configuration, with PACKZ and CLOUDFLOW. From there, a connection was established with CERM’s MIS for Labels & Packaging software, which has been in use in the company since its inception. Frederik Parrein, son of Stefaan and Operations Manager at Digi-Paq, remarks: “The previously manual checks of all incoming files have been fully automated. CLOUDFLOW makes sure that each file is directed to the right folder without any human intervention. We don’t have to worry about that anymore either. Thanks to the intelligent connection with CERM, we have a complete overview of the production process at all times and from anywhere.”

Simplified changes and approvals
Fixing incoming files has also been greatly optimized. Frederik: “Corrections are now done directly in the PDF with PACKZ, which also makes a world of difference. Source files are no longer necessary and every change to the product is fully trackable in the customer history. Once the file is ready, the customer receives a notification and can view one or more files at a time, which he can validate in a web portal. Before, everything was done by e-mail, a time that is fortunately over. The serenity that prevails today in prepress – you have no idea!”

Automation of repetitive tasks
Once the file has been validated, it is automatically prepared for printing. Stefaan explains: “There’s no need to pull your hair out. The file data, such as the inks to be used and the barcode, as well as the data from CERM, are automatically generated in a dashboard, which provides the operators with a perfect overview of all job-related information at all times. The repetition and addition of print marks required for printing and finishing is also fully automated.” Stefaan concludes: “Looking back on the past year, I can only congratulate us for making the right decision in choosing HYBRID as our partner. The difference compared to a year ago is drastic; this solution meets all our hopes and expectations. Vineyard Concha y Toro transforms their creative process with our iC3D visualization technology.

“By being able to visualize products with greater detail and fidelity before they are produced, we can make more accurate and faster decisions in the creative and development process.” – Teresa Errázuriz, Creative Design Manager

Viña Concha y Toro is one of the most recognized names in the world of wine. This company, founded in Chile in 1883, has transcended the Latin American market and has been named among the top five most admired wine brands worldwide for over five consecutive years.

Viña Concha y Toro has reached a presence in more than 130 countries, which requires a high turnover of projects and designs throughout the year. The design department handles more than 2,400 annual requirements and more than 150 design projects for its various wine lines. This workload represented a challenge for the 23 designers at the headquarters in Santiago, Chile, since accurately modelling and representing the multiple products in a digital format was not a standard and straightforward process, as is their wine production.

Since the introduction of iC3D Suite, digital layout has changed significantly for Concha y Toro. Teresa Errazuriz, Creative Design Manager, tells us how the process has been transformed since they chose to use digital layout software. “Before iC3D Suite, the digital layout process was through the search for references and then retouching in Photoshop,…. then to have a more finished digital model, the best quality mockup was purchased, but always having a supply limitation.

By changing the workflow with iC3D Suite, the team has optimized the time spent on each proposal, as they obtain realistic images with greater detail in fewer iterations and can visualize the final product in its entirety. Teresa tells us what the results have been so far: “By being able to visualize the products with greater detail and fidelity before producing them, we can make more accurate and faster decisions in the creative and development process.”

Our iC3D team specializes in providing training focused on customer needs. In the case of Concha y Toro, the focus was imaging with a better level of finish and detailed visualization of print finishes such as metallic foils, dies, and UV varnish. Being able to bring out the print details more clearly was of paramount importance, as these are what communicate the beauty and quality of the labels.

As Creative Design Manager, Teresa tells us the most important aspects to meet the market’s demands today and continue innovating within the packaging industry. “The important thing is not to lose sight of the business strategy, the essence of what we do and be clear about the pillars that mobilize success in design, which in our case are methodology, technology and specialization.”

Going. Digital. Together.

About ten years ago, Vollherbst and HYBRID Software entered a partnership.

Vollherbst is a print shop for special labels, a family business now in its 4th generation, that passionately caters to the wine, spirits, and high-quality luxury goods industry. The creative team at Vollherbst’s blood pumps for the production of authentic and strong brands via story-telling labels. Not too far from our HYBRID office in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, a relationship was formed as Vollherbst was beginning its digital transformation in 2011. Since then, 40 of their employees have ditched paperwork and implemented digitally based administrative operations.

Flash forward to 2022, the team at Vollherbst is taking the next step with HYBRID Software to modernize their prepress software. Although the benefit of digitization and automation is easy to rationalize, the fear that comes with change sometimes doesn’t budge – especially if this means a different way of doing your work. Vollherbst understood that the employee’s satisfaction with the software is a top priority, and didn’t give up until their team was on board! We understood this challenge and supported the team at Vollherbst with coaching, where the team’s questions could be answered while processing real production jobs.

At the end of the coaching, we are happy to say that the employees felt convinced of the benefits but moreover confident that this was the correct decision.

We look forward to the next steps together in the years ahead!

HP One Package Software

HP is a proud partner of ours and a household name around the world due to its successful product and service suite including personal systems, home and office printers, 3D printing, and industrial printing solutions. In the search for communication with other vendors and customers with the highest efficiencies, HP One Package Software was born. Built into the HP T-series presses, the HP One Package Software integrates and acts as a hub, connecting every component in the system, and attaining more flexibility and faster time to market for customers. HP One Package Software unites multiple vendors including GMG for color management, BST Eltromat for 100% print quality inspection, and Tilia Labs for planning, while CLOUDFLOW spearheads the communication at the core. The open architecture of these organizations allows for multi-vendor support for the greatest flexibility for our mutual customers.

HP + HYBRID Software

When HP started to design the One Package concept, they found that, whilst different customers had similar needs, there were always small differences concerning the integration with the different parts of the box-plant systems. HP realised that they needed a flexible platform that was easy to adapt to individual customer needs. They found this flexibility in HYBRID CLOUDFLOW.

After training by our team, the team at HP could independently set up a successful solution. After a short modification round from us, the final prototype solution was completed from start to finish in three short months.

“That’s it?!” – technician onsite for HP after the installation took less time than anticipated to deploy and get up and running

Digital Preprint for Corrugated Packaging

The HP PageWide T1190 Press with One Package Powered by CLOUDFLOW was up and running faster than any other press that HP had deployed. Since CLOUDFLOW is built on open standards, it has always been able to communicate freely to different systems, providing the solution HP was wishing for. CLOUDFLOW was adeptly able to solve HP’s challenge of pulling data from various inspection, corrugated, and planning systems, and our PDF Editor PACKZ supports the growing popularity of variable data printing including serialization for individual boxes and sheet-based serialization.

Mike Agness, Executive Vice President of HYBRID Software Americas, oversaw this project. He shares, “HYBRID Software solutions should be in the first line brilliantly simple. We aim to provide brilliant software solutions that at the end of the day create a comfortable experience for the end-user. The work together with HP to create HP One Package Software was a great collaboration of technology, and a project I am proud to have been a part of. This allows corrugated converters to achieve increased efficiencies like never before, and I look forward to the new possibilities for corrugated applications as well as for digital label printing. We orchestrate in planning the roll, whether that roll is 13 inches wide or 110 inches wide.”

Summary

When HP customers now have requests, they are taken care of very quickly, without any extra development needed, just configuration, and their customers benefit from rapid time to market. In addition, because HP utilized Global Graphic Software, our sister company, for state-of-the-art RIP possibilities, HYBRID Software’s central data management software connects flawlessly to the HP RIP.

Benefits:

  • Lowered Costs
  • Increased Production Capacity and Flexibility
  • Extensive manufacturing process
  • Open and fast
  • Increased efficiencies with the customer

HYBRID Software and Label Traxx suggested that integrating their systems would be helpful for the Milford, NH-based converter.

Streamlining a business can be complex when you have islands of data stored in different software solutions. Data should be in one source and used throughout. Connecting and sharing data between MIS and production systems can gain efficiencies and improve quality for any label printer.

A single, company-wide software solution that consolidates the information from all departments, integrated with the MIS, will optimize production management – and offer more information for informed business decisions – accounting, estimating and more. CSRs can respond in real time to customer queries, and jobs are visible across all business departments. Prepress tasks can be completely driven by job ticket information located from an MIS/ERP. This is particularly helpful with fast-paced, short-run digital jobs. It also eliminates redundancy, like scheduling jobs or creating quotations manually, or creating handwritten job tickets. It also assures consistency in the way companies work internally and with customers.

Milford, NH-based Amherst Label, one of the most respected custom label printers in the Northeast, has helped customers create custom labels, tags, and decals on-time, on-budget and to specifications for over 40 years. The family-owned business continues to put its extensive custom label printing experience to work for customers. The company specializes in digital, flexographic, and screen printing for a wide variety of industries, including bottle/beverage, direct mail, flexible packaging, healthcare, industrial, nutraceutical, and specialty foods.

Amherst installed Label Traxx MIS software in 2013 to replace a system that wasn’t built by people knowledgeable about labels. Meanwhile, in the prepress department, graphic artists did everything manually, utilizing apps like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for tasks like step and repeat. Katie Putnam, prepress/digital print supervisor, recalls, “With 10 sales reps/CSRs, our three graphic artists were getting buried every day.” They installed HYBRID PACKZ and HYBRID CLOUDFLOW to streamline tasks.

HYBRID Software and Label Traxx suggested that integrating their systems would be helpful. “We talked with another label company who had done the same thing and reported how well it improved their ability to process orders,” says Jim Cutler, operations manager.

When integrating MIS and production systems together, there are considerations. “We needed help from Label Traxx and HYBRID Software because we don’t have an on-site IT staff. Another issue is setting up the servers with the right file paths. You have to ensure you have solid help who understands what you’re doing,” suggests Cutler.

“It was great to have help onsite to see what we could do on a day-to-day basis—and contemplate how to automate the process,” adds Putnam.

Cutler also recommends anyone to understand what their customer service department will have to do in advance, because the process will change. “Our biggest challenge has been helping CSRs become comfortable with the new process.”

Since the integration began in 2019, Amherst Label has saved considerable time because it has eliminated many manual tasks. For example, before they took all order information from Label Traxx and wrote it on a piece of paper that was passed to prepress. Then, prepress would retype that data into a proof slug. “Obviously there was a lot of room for transposing numbers incorrectly or forgetting to change something,” says Putnam. “Now, we just import the metadata. That not only saved time but also eliminated errors.”

Working during COVID, Amherst Label tried to limit the walking its people did around it building. Eliminating the paper workflow really helped.

The greatest opportunity for accurate repeatability was step and repeat for their fast-paced digital work. Automating proofing, and different across step and repeat files, have saved a lot of time. “Manually, sometimes you don’t grab a small piece somewhere, and lose it. You’ll have it on the original, but miss it on all the repeats. Now, we create our label repeat file plan in Label Traxx and perform it automatically in HYBRID PACKZ. They’re always correct,” comments Putnam. “It’s very helpful for jobs that hold a large number of lots on the actual ticket. With 50 lots, we hit a button and automate the different ‘across files’ in two or three minutes – versus 10 minutes to create each file manually.”

Over the past couple years, Amherst Label has grown exponentially. Putnam has taken on digital management responsibilities in addition to prepress. “So instead of operating with three dedicated people, we’ve cut back to two and a half, and they’re still handling the increased workload,” marvels Cutler. “With the integration of our MIS and production systems, our customer satisfaction rate has been 99%, which means there was only 1% rejected work – with the same staff.”

“In the future, we’ll be utilizing information that flows back to Label Traxx, so CSRs can review job status without walking on the print floor,” says Putnam. “We’d also like to feed die line drawings back into Label Traxx and populate them into the die tooling information. The CSRs have seen bits and pieces of automation, and they’re pretty excited.”

Amherst Label links this entire innovative system to its pledge to a three-year visioning process called its Painted Picture. That commitment to improvement, progress, and being the very best they can be is often the driver for these kinds of investments.

Columbine Label, a custom label converter based in Centennial, Colorado, has recently installed HYBRID Software’s workflow production software, CLOUDFLOW, to enhance its pre-press capabilities and clear pre-existing bottlenecks caused by an overextended proofing process.

Previously utilizing a product that was tuned to automate just roughly one percent of the company’s business, Columbine Label was facing pains in its proofing process which was leading to back-ups and causing numerous problems across its departments.

‘The automation system we had before was basically a glorified file management system, it just automatically stored the file where it needed to go and that was pretty much it,’ said Erin Parker, customer support at Columbine Label. ‘A customer would still have to send us an email with multiple attachments, we would then have to push all this to our art team along with any instructions, then we would have to wait for all those pre-press tasks to clear only to find out that the art isn’t even usable.’

According to Columbine, for any single piece of art a customer sent over, proofing could sometimes extend over a week. This was due to errors that sometimes wouldn’t get caught until the art made it down to production, leading to the proof needing to be sent back to the customer, basically restarting the whole process. Extrapolate this across its customer base, and it becomes impossible to sustain.

Enter HYBRID Software.

Working with HYBRID for about a year, the software was implemented onto the company’s backend which was then interfaced with its frontend Label Traxx software, giving access to the proof as soon as the customer uploads it and allowing anyone, across departments, to access the file. The software is also capable of autodetecting any baseline errors such as formatting and incorrect file type. The art is then edited using HYBRID’s software, PACKZ.

According to Columbine, using these products has allowed employees across production, art, customer service, or sales to spot any errors almost immediately and alert the necessary team member in a much timelier manner allowing for quicker turnaround.

‘A proof that would have taken anywhere from two or three days could be done in less than 24 hours,’ said Brett Borzsei, production manager at Columbine Label. ‘This software has really sped up production to the point where we’re able to increase production and take on more work.’

The accessibility of the file manager has also managed to free up time of all its employees, according to the company, because now when another department comes across an issue, nobody needs to get pulled away from work, they can just log into the system and look directly at the error from their own computer and respond. The software also automatically archives every edit leaving less room for error because if, ‘you pull the wrong file and edit the wrong file, then production proofs the wrong file,’ says Borzsei. This also maintains accountability and ensures that no piece of art is ever lost as the software automatically dates and backs up any and all edited files.

And in terms of upskilling workers and training customers on this new system, Columbine says that this has also been relatively simple adding that accessing to the software, uploading files, and navigating is no more complicated than the Google Docs file manager. But getting to this point didn’t happen in just a few days.

While working with HYBRID, there were a few roadblocks Columbine encountered that made implementation take just a bit over a year. The company, however, says that most of the issues were self-induced as they didn’t fully understand what they needed from the product and didn’t initially have a staff member from each department on board, which the company says is crucial when implementing a product like this.

‘There was a point where we thought everything was good to go, until we realized that the bottleneck just got piled onto sales,’ said Phil Griffith, pre-press at Columbine Label. ‘We worked with HYBRID for months just trying to iron out some things. We didn’t know all the micro tasks the software could do, so we had to explain every problem we ran into, and they would find a solution for us.’

As for the future, the company is planning to add more automation to its processes, but what it’s adding is yet to be determined.

Article originally from the October 2021 issue of International Paper Board Industry and the September/October issue of Corrugated Today.

Digital presses have revolutionised packaging, delivering high-impact colour and creating a new paradigm for versioning and customisation. Despite its innovations, digitally printed packaging has not always offered solutions across the full spectrum of sizes and quantities. Georgia-Pacific Hummingbird® digital packaging solutions overcame that barrier by producing digitally pre-printed rolls for a full range of customer needs, from specialty versions to everyday large runs.

“GP Hummingbird really incubated at Georgia-Pacific’s Color-Box, one of the largest corrugated litho providers in North America,” recalls Robert Seay, Vice President, Digital Print Solutions, Georgia-Pacific. “They did something innovative. They took the work into pre-print, which included laminators and flatbed die-cutters – and the corrugated market.”

Along came the HP PageWide T400, complementing the other equipment. The company already had laminators where rolls or sheets could be made into combined board and its box plants were converting offset pre-print from a roll press. Now it could take the rolls right off the T400, and already had the tools to make that work, immediately. “The wide web digital press let us attack high graphics print completely differently. Then, it morphed and became its own business,” Seay adds.

GP Hummingbird was proof of concept that digital could work as an offset alternative. When the HP T1100 was announced, Hummingbird was the first packaging supplier in North America to provide 110-inch wide web capability for digital pre-print at lengths. Recently, Georgia-Pacific announced the purchase of an HP PageWide T1190 Press, the world’s highest-volume digital corrugated packaging solution, providing an east-west footprint. It will assure redundancy, provide scale, and let GP Hummingbird improve turnaround time while reducing shipping and logistics costs.

“Much of our value proposition is supply chain efficiency. We can help different corrugated converters, turning around high volumes quickly. It’s easier to ship rolls of pre-print than boxes,” notes Seay. “Anybody can order our rolls, but we focus on those who know how to run pre-print. Onsite packaging engineers can help optimise layouts and packaging structures.”

Varied Customer Base

Serving many converters, GP Hummingbird has to consider how its workflow will be used everywhere. Customers will deliver a piece of artwork, perhaps from a flexo job, but will want to print digitally. The artwork could be a square or a rectangle, but finishing and the requirements of the box must also be determined.

Once a one-up is approved, a step-and-repeat layout must be prepared. The sheets must be imposed for the converter’s cutter. For example, a converter might generally use rotary die-cutters. A file built for a flatbed die-cutter needs an edge trim and a sidebar to grab before it goes on a rotary. You have to rethink the artwork at three levels – the one-up for the customer, the ‘n-up’ sheet for print and the corrugating and die-cutting tolerances. What does that layout look like and how do they get the customer to approve it? GP Hummingbird wanted an automated solution.

The entire process of creating the art and structure requires that they are approved together. “Sometimes we complete the artwork, but the structure changes because it’s going to a different corrugated converter – or a different piece wants the flap slightly different. That puts the artwork out of synch with the structure,” says Seay. At first, the process was manual and intensive, with many cross-checks to assure something didn’t change along the way, requiring adjustments.

GP Hummingbird’s business model is special. “Our original workflow couldn’t be customised, which became limiting, pretty quick,” discloses Seay. “Because we had HP digital presses, we’d already bought the SmartStream front end. We needed tools that could be adapted for our needs. We invested in HYBRID Software’s PACKZ and CLOUDFLOW and discovered a flexible workflow.”

The workflow is used to clean up files and ensure that processes are standardised. That becomes fairly important given all the work running through the shop. “The more touch points, the more potential for mistakes. The first thing we did was deploy our workflow, along with our HP and graphic management software,” Seay adds. “The challenge is to know what you want to do and manage the installation as a software project. It was helpful that we could customise everything at our centralised hub in Cincinnati.”

A Comprehensive Process

GP Hummingbird breaks the workflow down into three buckets: programming and integration, editing tools and then step and repeat, building a solution that offers everything to create a press ready PDF. The workflow is tied into the order processing system when product designs are created. They can refer to an existing design that will be changed, an existing structure, or anything in between.

Human intervention could result in a lack of consistency. “We have a structured process so we can trust what’s going through our system,” says Dave Fox, Hummingbird Graphics Manager. Hummingbird creates PDFs that are automatically processed, eliminating judgment calls when setting the job for the press. An example is automated marks: Where are the slit lines and cut marks for the corrugated converter? What should the die-cutter expect?

The workflow conducts all of the traditional pre-press tasks like preflighting and trapping – as well as a few that are more sophisticated. For example, GP Hummingbird can recognise a barcode and replace it, adjusting for any print method. The company will also distort files to take into consideration what’s going to happen on the press or with the corrugated converter. It also conducts colour mapping, adjusts transparencies and clipping paths, and more. By standardising and automating these functions in one application, it makes creation of a press ready PDF file much easier. “We get different files from many different places. They arrive with a variety of issues. There are many things we can fix automatically,” continues Fox.

The company prefers to call its proofing system a graphics portal – not a customer or vendor portal – because it’s about managing the entire graphics process. It can offer quick layout suggestions that way. For example, solid fills can cost more using digital ink. GP Hummingbird will offer cost-effective alternatives that are graphically better and can show examples of what they might look like. Customers view their proofs online. If somebody wants to make a change, it’s not communicated via email. They can mark it up online and approve it, streamlining the entire process.

Step and repeat files and adjustments can be made without affecting the approved art. With the templates, imposing repeat items on existing layouts is faster and has increased consistency from layout to layout, because all marks are already placed, and approved.

Key to the process is being able to link the press upload server to the workflow, so files can be sent automatically to the press with a time stamp. There is one location to submit all project notes, reducing email traffic and offering a central place for team members to scan print sample info. Team members can track to see which jobs have been posted to press.

A Complete Workflow

During the COVID-19 pandemic, GP Hummingbird’s graphic designers were able to work from home and still be effective, working from the HYBRID server. “We really didn’t miss a beat. That’s a big deal,” exclaims Seay.

Delivering samples and proofs can delay a deadline, but some customers still want to visit and do crosschecks – although there have been fewer during COVID-19. Online proofing simplified the process and has made the workflow easy for many customers.

The software has eliminated a number of potential mistakes. That matters because customers want supply chain efficiency. “Our workflow conducts so many deep edits that our pre-production people can effectively normalise our production files in a third of the time, with fewer workarounds and issues due to file components. We cleared up a lot of initial graphics work making Hummingbird’s pre-press so streamlined that one person easily handles the work of two or three people using more traditional imposition tools,” says Seay.

“The corrugated converter or the supply chain constantly changes. We need to pivot on the fly. A lot of the complex decisions surround finishing. How much tolerance do you have on the die-cut or how is it laid out? For example, one high volume customer uses us for work that dynamically changes. When the art is ready, we need to print the jobs quickly, and to very specific specs,” he continues. “One job may require 70-inch rolls, while another might require 80 inches. If I didn’t have the workflow, it would be harder to manage.

“One of the key values of our workflow was flexibility. Digital is going to morph and evolve. We want to morph and evolve our software suite as well. We also want to offer a better experience for our customers. It really comes down to, ‘Can I control their artwork? Can I control the workflow in between? Can I give customers assurances that it’s going to get done in a structured manner?’ Because our workflow is incredibly flexible, adaptive and delivers high quality work, it is now extremely valuable for our business and our customers,” concludes Seay.

iMS builds global business with agile solution from HYBRID Software

Creative design, prepress and artwork production agency iMSGlobal has chosen CLOUDFLOW from HYBRID Software to ensure full production workflow flexibility across its multi-site operation. This is a symbiotic partnership that over the past five years has benefitted both companies and helped lay the foundations for the global expansion of iMS.

Headquartered in Sydney, iMSGlobal provides integrated marketing solutions for many of the world’s best-known brand owners, such as Danone, Nestlé and Unilever. With offices in Australia, Singapore, India, China, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, the company has a global reach, based on a knowledge workflow and single platform system that reduces time to market and improves productivity.

Working with clients, their agencies and print providers, iMS offers artwork, pre-press, colour and print management across all packaging, point of sale formats and print processes. It operates on a “Follow the sun” principle, with teams in different time zones collaborating to support clients and meet deliverables around the clock.

“Although we are a global company, we’re that little bit different to some of the other players, because we really focus on listening to our clients’ needs and being flexible,” says CEO Mark Mahoney. “So, we look for partners that have the same ethos and are happy to work with us to implement agile solutions that support our goals. As soon as we met the team at HYBRID and heard about their innovative approach, we could see that this would be the right fit for us.”

Following the sun
Underpinning the iMS vision is CLOUDFLOW from HYBRID Software, which has been rolled out across the four main production hubs in Sydney, Mumbai, Shanghai and Hull (in the UK). This is an Enterprise Packaging Workflow System that is fully integrated with the company’s own MIS (management information system). As a fully Cloud-based application platform with powerful Share technology, it links across the internet to exchange and synchronise project data and resources to optimise their utilisation.

Andrew Gale, iMS COO, says, “We wanted to find a model that really worked in our industry on a global scale. With CLOUDFLOW, we can easily manage projects around the group and truly ‘Follow the sun’. One of the real game-changers for iMS is access to all the global hubs within the same infrastructure; managing data in real-time is a huge bonus.”

CLOUDFLOW is specifically tailored for the packaging industry with support for PDF, colour separation, trapping, screening, proofing and much more. The modular nature allows users to define their own configuration and create a system that works best for their business. iMS is also using HYBRID Software’s PACKZ native PDF editor, which has been designed for labels and packaging to capture all elements of a print job in a single file for seamless prepress production.

“CLOUDFLOW is great for maintaining consistency across the board, so we have that continuity in every region where we are active. This is a massive advantage, not just for our technical teams, but for the whole business, and most importantly, for our customers,” says Andrew.

With floating licences that can be used irrespective of location, CLOUDFLOW has also proven to be the perfect choice during the COVID-19 pandemic as staff working from home can easily log in online without the need for specialised software.

Streamlining the businesses
It was at drupa 2016 that the two companies first connected and the plan for migrating to CLOUDFLOW and PACKZ was initiated. iMS was in the infancy of developing its own bespoke MIS as part of a drive to remove duplication of data and processes from the business, as they expanded to other countries.

“Australia is a smaller market, and it was a big decision for us to look abroad,” comments Andrew. “To support this move, we wanted a new fresh solution that would set us apart from the competition, because we needed to fundamentally change the business to make that leap.”

The goal was to streamline operations, keep an open platform and have full view of all assets at all times. Almost five years down the line, it is clear that the project with HYBRID Software has been a resounding success.

“During our negotiations with the HYBRID team, they were flexible and prepared to engage with us and help us to get the commercials right to suit the opportunity we had in hand,” says Mark. “Right from the start, we were very excited about what the solution promised to provide, and we are now seeing the real benefits and the technical advantages that this relationship is bringing us.”

Identifying the challenges and developing the software to each customer’s specific needs is the core mission for HYBRID Software. Paul Bates, who is the UK, Ireland & Global Accounts Manager, explains, “Although this sounds like a cliché, we do work very closely with our customers. CLOUDFLOW certainly wouldn’t be where it is today, if it wasn’t for that bi-directional relationship we have with the iMS team. Some of the functionalities you see in the software today were developed specifically for them to the benefit of all our customers. It has been a trailblazing cooperation.”

Mark concludes, “We’re looking to continue growing and we know we have a unique offering that not everyone enjoys. But this is only stage one and we’re excited about continuing the journey with HYBRID Software to see what we together can bring to the market.”

(Winooski, Vermont, USA)

With the help of FLAG, HYBRID Software and Label Traxx, Dwane Wall has streamlined CLOV’s prepress processes to drive efficiency.

Creative Labels of Vermont (CLOV) is a second-generation, family-owned label printing company located in Winooski, VT, USA. CLOV was founded in 1983 with three employees, a Vandenburg label press and a handmade screwdriver rewinder. Today over 30 employees service customers in food and beverage, wine, beer and spirits industries, printing labels up to 13” wide and 21” long.

The company operates four conventional flexo presses and two HP Indigo WS6800 digital presses. Although CLOV’s prepress department was equipped with the latest technology from art editing workstations to platemaking, Dwane Wall, president of CLOV, knew something was missing from his workflow.

Over the years, the converter has leaned on industry partnerships to help boost the business. Approximately six years ago, Wall reached the conclusion that there had to be a better way to deal with art files. At the time, he recalls, “Everyone would get a proof, FedEx that proof and handle it in a sneaker net type process. Everyone would name files differently and we would often print the wrong label.”

Wall perceived automation as the only way to be successful, noting, “I knew there was a better way to do it. But I just didn’t know what it looked like.”

Dwane Wall, President of Creative Labels of Vermont

Enter Mike Agness, executive VP, Americas at HYBRID Software, whom Wall met at an industry event where he sketched out his vision on the back of a cocktail napkin. Wall realized that with the growth of digital and proliferation of SKUs, automation would play an even greater role in the coming years. “Dwane really understood his business and wanted to stay in front of it,” says Agness. “Unfortunately, not all converters are that proactive. He knew he would have more jobs coming in because of digital but didn’t want to keep hiring prepress operators.”

From that initial meeting, Wall and Agness sketched out a plan forward. Agness notes that HYBRID’s philosophy is to “right sell” – enabling customers to embrace a product and then move forward when the business is ready. Wall describes the process as giving him the power to “inch worm his way along. Cash is finite so we appreciated the flexibility of doing one thing, figuring it out and then bringing on a new component.”

First CLOV installed PACKZ, a standalone software tool for PDF editing that put file editing and manipulation into operator hands. Unlike Adobe Illustrator, an application for label design, PACKZ prepares PDF files efficiently for print production.

Six months later came CLOUDFLOW with the Proofscope module. This package drove even greater efficiencies through his entire process by providing digital asset database management to ensure that his computer worked in sync with his MIS system. Additionally, Wall could now send customers a web link to view their label on any browser. Files now come in and are automatically pre-flighted and moved along. And everyone is always looking at the latest file tracked by the software.

Agness credits Wall with driving the need for change throughout his organization, noting, “You really have to embrace change to become more efficient. Dwane got his customer service and prepress teams engaged which was critical. He gave reasons that change needed to happen and why they should believe.”

Driving collaboration
In order to maximize HYBRID’s software, Wall needed it to speak seamlessly with his Label Traxx MIS program. He used a FLAG event to broker a relationship between the two companies and convince Label Traxx that it should open up its program to another workflow supplier. As Wall recalls, “I liked HYBRID’s business philosophy – they value their customers and appreciate our business. I’m a small business and I feel comfortable when I’m being treated openly, honestly and fairly. And to make the most out of HYBRID, I needed this collaborative problem solving to occur between the two companies.”

From this first meeting, a very positive relationship was born. Today the two companies talk openly, co-develop programs and bring new solutions to the label industry.

Wall has used his positive experience with HYBRID to encourage other FLAG members to try the software. Agness acknowledges that “every time we saw Dwane talking to another owner at a FLAG event or a trade show and showing label art right on his phone that a sale wasn’t far behind.”

Wall suggests that he’s “probably sold more packages than some of their salespeople.”

HYBRID became a FLAG vendor partner approximately four years ago, and in that time has participated in all available in-person and virtual events, and hosted Lunch and Learns. As FLAG has grown to 100+ members, so has HYBRID’s customer base. FLAG customers who lease software from HYBRID see a big rebate in the first year. Agness notes, “We cut sizable checks to FLAG customers – and always with a smile on our faces.” He acknowledges that FLAG has been a great investment for HYBRID, as the organization doesn’t need to hire a national accounts salesperson.

“FLAG gives us the introduction and gets us to the corner office much quicker. It’s a win-win-win organization,” he adds.

Wall, a 10-year FLAG member, adds, “When we first became members, John McKay had a good vision of what he thought he could build. What he’s actually doing today is extremely valuable for the industry as a whole. It offers a different level of camaraderie, multi-functional learning and fosters a sense of trust and collaboration.”

Wall participates in peer groups, attends all meetings, encourages his buyers to work with FLAG vendor partners and uses contingency backup as a sales tool for his bigger customers. He adds, “Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the rebates. A dollar is a dollar– but I put great value on everything else the group brings to me.”

As with many FLAG members, CLOV has been extremely busy over the past year, printing labels for food, wine and spirits and personal care customers. He realizes that he “just couldn’t do the volume we’re doing today the old way. We used to have four people in our prepress area. We were able to repurpose two of them and now we have only two individuals doing three times the work.”

Investing in software, rather than manpower, is a clear selling point for HYBRID. Agness notes that a fully burdened software solution in a five-year lease is “half the cost of a fully loaded FTE right out of college. And software is there 24/7, 365 days of the year, takes up no space and never goes on vacation.”

Wall adds, “The market has changed and so many of our customers require multiple SKUs, and shorter run lengths. Our beer guys sometimes need labels for 20-30 different beers. And for some applications – for example, nutraceutical labels for people and pets which are then private labeled to chiropractors and vets – we wouldn’t even have been able to gain the business without our automation capabilities from HYBRID.”

He concludes with his usual humor, “I’ve made a lot of dumb mistakes in my career, but HYBRID wasn’t one of them.”

Colorman Ireland Ltd, the leading print service provider, has chosen to partner with HYBRID Software to speed up operations in the prepress department. The company has seen substantial time and costs savings since introducing PACKZ, the native PDF editor, into its workflow.

Located in Broombridge, Dublin, Colorman’s printing campus covers 200,000 sq ft and employs over 160 staff. With a large portfolio of high-end clients, the company produces a wide range of print and packaging solutions. These include litho, digital, secure print and gift card manufacturing; ranging from healthcare fulfilment to print enhancements.

After investing in two floating PACKZ licenses, which are accessed across four Mac workstations, the time spent preparing each file for print has been cut by up to 50% on average. David Noone, Prepress Manager at Colorman, commented, “The jump up from our existing workflow and processes has been impressive, and we are now able to run a much leaner operation. The transition to PACKZ has also been remarkably simple and the software fits in well with our production workflow.”

New solution for packaging prepress
Colorman was first established in 1959 as a silk screen printing company, specialising in point of sale and poster hoardings for the advertising market. Over the years, it expanded into litho printing, and in the 1980s began diversifying into supplying the multi-national IT sector. Today, it is one of Europe’s leading full-service print and packaging companies, servicing the leading global companies in the technology, FMCG, corporate commercial, medical device and pharmaceutical industries.

In 2005, Colorman ventured into packaging and began supplying folding cartons to pharmaceutical and medical device clients. Since then, that side of the business has continued to expand, and today makes up over 50%. With more and more packaging jobs coming through the prepress department, it was becoming clear that a dedicated, more effective prepress solution was needed to continue on this growth path.

The team at Colorman started investigating the next-level software solutions that could replace the systems that were currently in place, including PACKZ from HYBRID Software.

As a native PDF editor, PACKZ has been developed specifically for labels and packaging with a number of features that eliminate repetitive tasks by introducing higher levels of automation. Version 6 released late last year comes with a redesigned user interface that contributes to an even better user experience.

Proof of concept tested live
During the evaluation process, HYBRID Software conducted a number of tests using job files from Colorman to show how the software would benefit their production. David explained, “The HYBRID team asked me to let them run one of our client’s jobs through the software, so we could compare like for like and really understand how many mouse clicks that could be saved. From there, we were able to quantify how quickly the investment would pay for itself and base our decision on that data.”

The job file testing in PACKZ was done remotely by HYBRID’s Solution Engineer Matt Dutch, who sent videos of the whole process back to Colorman’s prepress team for analysis. “We can demonstrate something until we’re blue in the face,” said Paul Bates, HYBRID Software’s UK, Ireland & Global Accounts Manager, “but Matt took David’s files and ran them as if he was one of their own production guys, so they could see the real-life advantages, rather than looking at one of our pre-prepared demonstration files.”

Once the software was installed, the Mac operators were also trained remotely by Tony Lawrence, who joined HYBRID Software six months ago with extensive experience of using PACKZ from his time as a studio manager. The sessions were scheduled around the productions shifts at Colorman to ensure a smooth and quick transition.

“The training was great and quite straightforward,” said David. “HYBRID was very accommodating and flexible, and the operators were very happy. Hats off to Tony too – his experience with using the product as a client really shone through.

“PACKZ is a big step up from what we had in place before. There’s a lot more efficiency there, and it was obvious from day one that we could get through file preparation so much quicker,” he added.

Set up for future growth
The sale was facilitated through HYBRID Software’s agent in Ireland, Litho Supplies, whose Sales Director is Richard Styles. He said, “Colorman has been able to reduce the number of steps in its processes, greatly increase efficiencies and demonstrate real time savings thanks to PACKZ. It is further proof that our decision to add HYBRID Software to our product offering in Ireland is truly paying dividends for our clients.”

The investment in PACKZ came just at the right time for Colorman and there is no doubt that it will be a vital factor in supporting the company’s future growth. “PACKZ has removed a bottleneck in our workflow and allowed us to free up significant amounts of time that we can now use more productively,” concluded David. “Most importantly, it enables us to respond quickly to our customers’ needs, especially in the packaging market, where we have seen a large increase in demand during the pandemic.”

With ‘Intelligent Flexo’, HYBRID Software brings an innovative solution to the market that dramatically increases flexo output quality. It is a machine-independent software solution that adds microcell structures to the screening dots and thus increases the ink transfer from the plate to the substrate. The biggest advantages are lower ink consumption and increased print quality of flat tints, vignettes, barcodes as well as fine text.

This technology is based on the know-how used by Antwerp-based Steurs Graphic Solutions. The company has been around since 1949 and is today one of the leading prepress houses in the Benelux. Steurs combines more than 70 years of experience in prepress, packaging and publishing into one all-round service. Steurs’ Managing Director Dirk Cantens adds: “We supply plates for all types of media, from paper to metal. Our customers are printers and brand owners who are extremely sensitive to both the stability and color consistency of their printed material and packaging. Ensuring quality and stability is one of our priorities, and we guarantee our customers a homogeneous, stable and 100% reproducible printing environment, regardless of the material to be printed on. Unburdening customers is our burden, and they know that no quality concessions are made at Steurs.”

Innovate and keep innovating
Steurs has always been an innovator and to stay ahead of the competition, the company established its own R&D department in 2014, where they develop innovative solutions to increase the quality of their services even further. Tom De Bondt, Chief Technology Officer at Steurs, says: “R&D is critical to our philosophy. To be taken serious as a professional prepress partner, you must be able to innovate, and develop tailor-made solutions to customers’ challenges. Our R&D department works closely with our sales team and production managers and sits almost always at the table when we’re talking to brand owners and converters.”

Still room for improvement
Flexo has many advantages over offset and gravure, like lower production costs and greater flexibility with regards to different substrates. But in the past, the print quality and consistency was not always top notch. According to Dirk Cantens, this changed when machine builders & plate suppliers introduced ‘flat top dot’ technologies several years ago. “This has greatly increased the quality of flexo printing. However, having said that, we believed that there was still room for improvement.”

S-Dot development
To address these specific issues, back in 2014, the R&D department started developing several technologies to improve the quality of flexo printing. Tom: “Over the past 6 years, we developed our own screening technology under the name S-Dot. This product is now marketed by HYBRID Software under the name Intelligent Flexo, but more on that later. With Intelligent Flexo, the behavior of a flexo plate can be influenced locally or entirely in terms of ink transfer and dot gain. This makes it possible, for example, to achieve higher densities in flat tints, while dot gain can be limited in other protected areas. The quality boost by using Intelligent Flexo is very noticeable, among other things, by the elimination of edge void in barcodes and flexo edges in text and linework. Printing light tints and vignettes to 0%, or shadows up to 99%, is now perfectly feasible. Something that was almost impossible before.”

Tailor-made surface screening ensures perfect control over dot gain

From corrugated cardboard to the label market
Initially, Steurs focused on corrugated cardboard applications in the development of Intelligent Flexo. With the many online stores that have been popping up like mushrooms lately and the increasing importance of shelf-ready packaging, corrugated cardboard is on the rise. With a better print quality, the expensive caching could be avoided, which would entail huge cost savings for the brand owners. Dirk: “One of the typical problems when printing corrugated cardboard is the ‘washboard’ effect. Due to minimal height differences in the cardboard, you get different pressure zones resulting in a kind of banding. The effect can be partly avoided by applying less pressure (kiss printing) on the press, but eliminating it altogether is almost impossible. Intelligent Flexo solves this problem largely by using an intelligent screening technology. When compared to traditional flexo plates, much less pressure is required on the plates, and that without compromising image quality, well on the contrary.”

Once Steurs mastered the technique for corrugated cardboard, they set off to develop this technology for the label & flexibles market, because there as well, significant improvements and savings were possible. Tom adds: “In 2015, we finished second at the Packaging Innovation Awards with our technology. A clear signal to us that we were on the right track, and an incentive to further develop the technology. But with the expansion into the label market and the increasing volumes, a limitation also came to light. The process was quite labor-intensive and to use it on a larger scale, automating the process was a must. Since we already had a long-term relationship with HYBRID Software and their applications, they seemed like the right partner to further develop this together. To protect our pioneering work and our market position in the Benelux, we agreed with HYBRID Software that Intelligent Flexo would only be distributed in countries outside the Benelux.”

Automate with CLOUDFLOW
In 2019, Steurs was also awarded Gold at the Global Flexo Innovation Award ceremony in Istanbul. In the same year, Steurs also sat down with HYBRID Software and started the collaboration to further develop the product as a module within the automation context of CLOUDFLOW. Because this concerns top technology from Flemish soil, a grant application was also submitted and obtained from the Flemish Agency for Innovation & Entrepreneurship VLAIO. Important in the further development was increased ease of use. Thomas Elton, Product Manager CLOUDFLOW at HYBRID Software says the following: “We didn’t have to change anything about the technology itself, but where our added value came around, was mainly in the development & parameterization of a tool, which brings about a quality improvement for all possible flexo production machines and plates. In addition, unique algorithms have also been developed to fully automate the manual steps that Steurs used to apply.”

The typical edge voids for barcodes and linework disappear when using Intelligent Flexo

Intelligent Flexo on the market
A year later, the egg was laid. Hybrid Software introduced Intelligent Flexo at the end of 2020, and the outlook looks promising. Bert Van der Perre, Associate Director of Sales at HYBRID Software explains: “With Intelligent Flexo, we offer a solution to flexo printers to drastically reduce ink consumption, which will have an immediate positive effect on the margins of the printed matter. In addition, we increase color strength and text sharpness of the prints. For the plate supplier, this is the ideal solution to increase the quality of its services without expensive upgrades or investments in new machinery.”

Having originally invested in PACKZ from HYBRID Software in 2016, Aztec Label has confirmed it is investing in a second license for the native pdf editing software due to accelerating growth of the Kidderminster-based company.

Offering a range of label and tag production capabilities, Aztec has announced a number of new press and equipment investments in recent months, including a 4,000ft2 extension of the facility, to boost the company’s capacity, quality and performance.

Colin Le Gresley, Managing Director of Aztec Label, said of the latest investment: “Adding an extra seat to our prepress department ensures we are eliminating any potential bottlenecks as the company grows. I’m delighted that my eldest son, Oliver, who is currently completing his degree at Birmingham University, will be taking on this work. We desperately need new prepress capacity as we’ve had record sales over the last twelve months, despite the pandemic, and 2021 is looking like another exciting year for the business.

“PACKZ acts like a prepress one-stop-shop for us. With such a broad array of customers, we need the ability to deal with lots of files, coming from multiple sources, in a simple way. There are no file conversions needed, it’s universal, secure and self-contained. PACKZ offers the ability to check font issues and embedded information and deals with trapping, editing, and full step and repeat, all in one file that can go straight to platemaking. Making the decision to invest again, securing the prepress advantages we already have, was simple.”

Greg Heather, Sales Manager, HYBRID Software UK, added: “There are over 3,500 seats for PACKZ in operation now worldwide and we were delighted that Colin and his team wanted to invest again. The software is perfect for businesses like his that have moved from standard desktop applications years ago to a professional prepress software environment. PACKZ grows with the business realising more and more benefits and with our focus on staying close to our customers, it was great to see that HYBRID Software was once again the natural choice for this high growth business.”

(Sydney, New South Wales, Australia) Rentons Labels, a rapidly growing label printer from New South Wales Australia, expanded their capabilities by adding the latest HP Indigo press to its arsenal. To better serve their customers, Rentons Labels chose PACKZ to support them in their growth: HYBRID Software’s native PDF prepress production tool designed specifically for the labels and packaging markets.

“We have introduced new value-added solutions at Rentons Labels, such as security features on labels, which have significantly grown our business”, shares CEO, Romeo Sanuri. “This growth has required us to do more with the existing resources that we have. In this regard, PACKZ has helped us tremendously to reduce the time we spend on prepress and increase the speed to market for our valued customers.”

Brenton King, Sales Manager at HYBRID Software for the Australasia market, reflects that, “Just like everyone this year, Rentons Labels needed to make a pivot. One of the main reasons the company decided for PACKZ was the software’s ability to save time in the setup process. This empowered their team to spend more time on the road selling labels, and ultimately, selling recently launched solutions such as their label security solution, which helps protect customers and their brand against counterfeit.”

New PACKZ Nebula Interface for label creation

PACKZ implementation at Rentons Labels

Through the implementation of PACKZ, Rentons Labels’ production time was significantly reduced, especially through the white underprint feature which creates varnish and special colors intelligently and automatically.

The step and repeat and imposition increased their speed and accuracy of output, as approved artwork can be sent to the press just soon after being delivered to the print room. Moreover, the dynamic creation of Rentons Labels’ proof sheets using the Live Objects feature has dramatically reduced the time and reduced the scope for error. As an ongoing project, HYBRID Software and Rentons Labels are aiming to reduce this scope even further via an integration with their PRINT IQ MIS system.

“HYBRID Software is extremely pleased to assist Rentons Labels in this process”, adds Brenton King. “As with all of our installations, we are happy to partner with any size business by supplying software solutions to drive efficiencies, not only for today, but to keep up with the ever-growing demands of the market.”

PACKZ 6 brings further automation

With the most recent version of the software, PACKZ 6 offers even further automations providing customers time-saving benefits by sweeping away repetitive tasks from their workflows.

PACKZ captures all elements of a job in a single PDF file. The software contains all the features required for labels and packaging production such as trapping, full transparency support, colour separation mapping, Live Objects for variable content, barcode pre-flight and creation, tabular step & repeat, and structured assets including fonts, images, separations, object-based screening settings, barcodes, and other PDF objects.

A young and dynamic company from Tilburg, Netherlands, CUPSZ was founded by two brothers, Michiel and Daan Willemsz in 2014. Their keen interest in cup printing and producing at high quality is evident as they spend a lot of time in research and development to ensure they are at the front end of printing innovation and delivering the best possible solutions to their customer base.

CUPSZ and PACKZ for enhanced innovation

In 2018, CUPSZ began their journey with HYBRID Software. By implementing PACKZ as their native PDF editor, they saw increased efficiency. Of course, for the creation of their cups, the conical warping feature was very important to them. A year later they were ready to take the next step and to automate the prepress production even further with CLOUDFLOW.

On the partnership between us, the Willemsz brothers share that, “We are delighted with our partnership with HYBRID. Their fantastic software and their support play an important role in the steep growth of our company. The integration with CERM and the CLOUDFLOW automation features allow us to remain a lean operation.”

CERM Integration

Fully integrated with their MIS (CERM) system, artwork files get warped automatically. The print sheet gets created for the customer for approval along with a link to the 3D file – all online. As the digital integration of customer approval speeds up the process, the workflow can soon continue by sending the stepped up file to steer the digital press.

HYBRID and CUPSZ joint projects

HYBRID Software hasn’t only helped out with CUPSZ projects. In preparation for the LabelExpo in 2019, HYBRID became a customer of CUPSZ as we were searching for personalized coffee cups. In the end, 25,000 cups were successfully created with variable text, barcode, image transformations and logos.

In their brand new headquarters, CUPSZ prints the substrate on a Xeikon digital printing press in their own production facility. In addition, at their disposal are a number of folding machines which cater to the various sizes the cups are ordered in.

Continued partnership for the future

Bert Van der Perre, Area Sales Manager shares, “It is always a pleasure to sit with Michiel and Daan around the table, brainstorming different process improvements and automation possibilities — always of course with a coffee cup nearby!”

HYBRID Software is excited for the growth over the years at CUPSZ and is of course looking forward to the continuous lending of innovative ideas together.

Hager Papprint, replacing its previous system with HYBRID PACKZ and CLOUDFLOW, has been able to make many processes quicker, more efficient and more transparent, requiring about a third of the time previously needed to move a job through prepress.

Hager Papprint, based in Saarland, Germany, has an extensive history in the field of printing. The family business was founded in 1896 as a book printing and bookbinding shop. It has developed itself into a successful mid-sized industrial company specialising in the production of folding cartons and displays in offset and digital printing.

“Our company has consistently advanced itself over the years. Currently we are working on a new building in order to expand our capacities and meet the growing demands. In the future, we will manufacture for our wide range of clients from food, industry, healthcare and other non-food sectors on more than 10,000 m² of production and storage space. Our customers, most of whom have been with us for many years, appreciate our flexibility and our one-stop shop,” explains managing director Günter Merziger, who has been managing and developing the company together with Susanne and Thomas Wirbel for many years.

“In addition to production, proper artwork preparation also plays a major role. We have always recognized the advantages an internal prepress department would deliver us. We clearly benefit from: extensive experience, shorter workflow steps, quicker adjustments, and optimum quality,” states Merziger. “When it comes to their print artwork files, our customers have been happy with our direct and uncomplicated service. We couldn’t have accomplished this with just any software supplier.”

Maurice Cadet, prepress team leader at Hager Papprint, confirms that the production of folding boxes has special requirements. “Although in the end it’s only a printed sheet that passes through the press, producing a folding box brings with it many demands. The production with spot colors, the exact positioning of elements afterwards on the different surfaces of the box, the coding for the finishing process—the list is long!”

Hager Papprint recently changed the direction of their prepress and decided to move forward with HYBRID Software products. Günter Merziger remembers, “It wasn’t easy for me, because we already had a quite sophisticated software prepress environment, which we had been using successfully for many years. However, it was clear that there was an innovation backlog from our previous supplier, to which we had to respond. Our company needed to continue to develop in this area. Since, from the past, we already knew some of the people at HYBRID Software, we decided to examine the possibilities together.”

Along with HYBRID Software, intensive research was conducted to obtain as good a picture as possible of the actual results. “We outlined the processes of our previous software environment and counter-measured them with several benchmarks using HYBRID Software tools. I was aware that HYBRID Software’s PACKZ and CLOUDFLOW had proven their exceptional performance with some of our competitors. However, the results of our own benchmark tests really impressed me,” comments Maurice Cadet. “When you suddenly realize that, beyond proven working methods, results can be achieved much faster, safer and, above all, much easier, you quickly recognize the potential for your own company.”

Hager Papprint decided to implement PACKZ and CLOUDFLOW, which was intensively accompanied by Maurice Cadet’s involvement. “Even on the second day of our team’s PACKZ training, we decided that we could begin replacing the old systems during the following week. To date, we’re very happy with our decision, as it is so much easier working with the PACKZ PDF Editor. Even though we did, of course, take a short period of time getting used to the new system, that is completely normal. I was particularly impressed by the live objects in PACKZ: the application of complex print marks is now really child’s play!”

In order to automate the prepress processes to a greater extent and to increase the capacity of the existing team, a CLOUDFLOW environment was also established to provide departments with central access to production data, direct communication and distributed quality control.

Günter Merziger is satisfied with his decision. “Since the introduction of HYBRID PACKZ and CLOUDFLOW and its corresponding integration with our ERP system, we have been able to make many processes quicker, more efficient and more transparent. All in all, we now find that we need about a third of the time previously needed to move a job through prepress. This gives us the opportunity to handle a significantly higher volume of orders with our existing team.”

Apart from the technical aspects, cooperation was also an important factor for Hager Papprint. Maurice Cadet comments, “We wanted a partner with whom we could work constructively, transparently, and who would be prepared to take unbureaucratic and unconventional paths if necessary. During the joint implementation of PACKZ and CLOUDFLOW we noticed, time and again, that the chemistry with HYBRID Software simply fit the bill.”

As a next step, Hager Papprint customers will become directly involved in the process.

(Freiburg, Germany) 4Packaging has installed HYBRID Software PACKZ and CLOUDFLOW to assure seamless communication between the 4Packaging MIS/ERP and a fast, efficient means to engrave gravure cylinders for their customers.

Starting as a family business back in 2000, 4Packaging is now a leading company in gravure and embossing tool manufacturing as well as in digital reproduction in Germany and South Africa.

Total Control

4Packaging’s production is controlled by a commercial and ERP/MIS production system (4POS) developed by their own IT team to track all their production jobs, which consists of over 140 gravure cylinders and 4 embossing forms per day. However, along with a successful ERP/MIS system, 4Packaging needed a world-class prepress production system to prepare artwork files and output them quickly for engraving whilst also being able to communicate seamlessly with their ERP/MIS system. They decided upon HYBRID Software’s PACKZ and CLOUDFLOW.

One of the reasons 4Packaging chose PACKZ and CLOUDFLOW was because of the improved efficiency the products would deliver. Especially beneficial for 4Packaging was PACKZ and CLOUDFLOW’s powerful TIFF output capabilities for gravure. Thanks to multi-threading, most of the power is harnessed straight through the power of their state-of-the-art server. Cylinder data can be created much more efficiently, and correction cycles are accelerated.

5. 4Packaging’s ultra modern production infrastructure

Switch to PDF

PACKZ, HYBRID Software’s PDF Editor, allows quick access to step and repeat tools with simultaneous work on forms, file launch and live file rendering. In fact, 4Packaging transformed their entire system to a PDF workflow.

PACKZ and CLOUDFLOW, HYBRID’s workflow server, form a seamless, integrated integration and allow prepress operators to be involved in the complete job production process. By combining the use of the two products, 4Packaging has built an efficient solution introducing workflow automation and increased manual work efficiency. For example, 4Packaging’s prepress operators no longer need to search for files, as the workflow intelligently supplies the file to them at just the right moment in the process.

In addition, the CLOUDFLOW Packzflow Option provides prepress features that are completely driven by job ticket information. Packzflow effortlessly relocates a job’s order information from the MIS/ERP directly into production information. This information can also allow the system to prepare files before they are manually edited.

David Möller says: “We are always searching for new options to assure the best quality available on the market. Thus, why we made the switch to HYBRID Software. By using their workflow automation software CLOUDFLOW, we can achieve a higher level of automation in our processes and a lower error rate. What´s more, our highly-qualified operators can focus on more complex steps of the orders. PACKZ allows us to prepare delivered data for the printing process and avoid errors caused by file conversions. From now on, we will only be working with common PDF files in which fonts and images are embedded automatically.”

“When you look at the way we have built CLOUDFLOW, a function and its API call have often been developed before its user interface,” reports Christopher Graf, HYBRID Software’s Chief Marketing Officer. “This makes the API very robust, as our developers are using it, from the first step.” That´s why the API comes with such an extensive set of features. Thanks to the API, the 4Packaging IT team can invent new solutions to relieve the operators from some or all of the workload. In fact, after a few weeks of team training and coaching with HYBRID Software Solution Architects, the development team of 4Packaging had already begun building a number of their own new, clever solutions.

Through this cooperation between 4Packaging and HYBRID Software engineers—and a powerful API—a fast, seamless, successful working prepress solution has been put into place that, along with the 4Packaging in-house MIS/ERP, is unlike any other.

(Gent, Belgium) Jupiter Prestige Group (JPG), the global packaging graphics specialist whose European HQ is in Essex, UK, has licensed PACKZ and CLOUDFLOW from HYBRID Software to standardise workflows and enhance process automation across their global studios.

PACKZ and CLOUDFLOW, are installed at three production hubs in the UK, Hong Kong and United States after extensive pilot projects and are in use by more than 250 staff members worldwide.

“HYBRID’s CLOUDFLOW system allowed us to retire multiple legacy production applications and implant a unified framework that provides the foundation to develop further innovative solutions that benefit us and ultimately our customers.” Says Mark White, JPG’s managing director.

“The life cycle of each file has become more efficient at all stages through our production studios. We now control our internal approve cycles behind the scenes removing the latency from production, the status of each file is fed back into our internal management information system automatically so everyone from management to the operators know exactly where and at what stage a task or project is at instantly.”

In addition to licensing PACKZ, the native PDF prepress production tool designed for labels and packaging, JPG has licensed multiple CLOUDFLOW modules – Workspace, Packzflow and Proofscope.

CLOUDFLOW is a modular system that has allowed JPG to link their internal management information system ‘The Hub’ with the CLOUDFLOW system via a custom-built API. This allows JPG to drive data straight from their project teams directly into the CLOUDFLOW system and automate tasks. By automating these tasks JPG has improved efficiency and quality control, taking human error out of the equation.

“The Proofscope module is a big hit for our teams”, adds White. “This product forms part of our internal approval cycles. It allows a streamlined paperless quality control process within production between our Artworkers and QC operators, using just a few simple clicks. Proofscope has great mark-up tools allowing our QC operators to communicate amendments back to our artwork teams effectively through our internal management information system.”

JPG says it chose to replace its internally developed workflow scripts with software from HYBRID because their solutions seemed to be more streamlined, intuitive and intelligent than the other products they researched, as well as being priced more realistically so commercially more competitive. “The team at HYBRID really look after their customers and their support teams are amazing when it comes to providing solutions, which gave us the confidence to move ahead and choose them as a partner”. Added White.

Get to know Snakeprint: a young flexo printing company specialising in flexible packaging that works even more flexibly since integrating PACKZ.

Snakeprint’s entire graphic processing with 1-up editing, step-and-repeat and print marks is done singularly in PACKZ. HYBRID has enjoyed working with Snakeprint and we’re thrilled to see their renovated digital editing process, which smoothly covers all steps from registering customer data to final output.

We are already looking forward to the next projects with Snakeprint!

🐍 Visit them on their website: https://snakeprint.de/

Read their story:

Snakeprint is a specialized foil printing company in Bensheim, Germany with many years of experience in the field of foil production in flexo printing. Snakeprint’s catalog of services includes professional advice on individual foil packaging solutions, optimal preparation of the print images in the in-house digital prepress and the high-quality production process with printing and finishing.

HYBRID is a reliable partner in the digital prepress sector. Print shop manager Oliver Schöne recalls: “It was clear to us that we would need a powerful, easy-to-use solution that could meet our high-quality standards and at the same time enable us to implement jobs efficiently and quickly. We also knew that only a PDF-based approach was an option for us, as this is clearly the format of the future. This is how we became aware of HYBRID Software and PACKZ.” After a training and set-up phase, Snakeprint will implement the processing of the digital print images 100% in PACKZ, as well as the creation of the overall forms and the decoration of the print marks. David Geschwind, the technical director of Snakeprint shares: “Since we are supplied almost exclusively with PDF data in our daily work, PACKZ is the perfect tool for us. We can start work directly without any major conversion.

The fact that we can operate the entire digital editing process, from checking customer data and single-up processing to cross-feed and special flexo screen configuration, with a single application makes everyday life much easier! With the help of the integrated checking mechanisms, we can also identify critical areas and errors early on and avoid unnecessary correction rounds.”

Oliver Schöne is looking forward to the future: “At Snakeprint, we offer extremely high-quality, special solutions and want to provide our customers with a very special quality through our expertise and modern production methods. Of course, we are very pleased about the successful start-up phase, in which our prepress department has benefited greatly from the professional support provided by HYBRID Software. Even in times of COVID-19 we are very confident that we are needed and that Snakeprint will be a model of success. And we are happy to have strong partners on our side!”

It was an exciting moment for us when Schwab Offset’s CEO, Mr. Alexander Kimpel, chose HYBRID Software to drive their digital transformation forward.

For us, this project is characterised by the fact that all their departments now benefit from CLOUDLFOW’s central application and communication and quality control have become more efficient.

We are especially pleased that Schwab Offset can now offer their long-standing customers better service than ever before!

Learn their story:

Schwab Offset is a company with a long tradition. The family business in Hainburg, Hesse, has been in existence since 1965 and has been manufacturing sheetfed offset printing for 40 years. In addition to classic commercial products such as brochures, flyers and calendars, the print shop’s product portfolio also includes posters and billboards, maps and flight maps, folding cartons, displays and trays.

Since 2014, Alexander Kimpel, the youngest member of the family, has been at the helm of the company and is driving forward the “digital transformation” that is being discussed everywhere. But what are the prerequisites for this?

“In a print shop today, it is no longer just a question of printing alone, but rather the printing press is at the center of an ecosystem whose components need to be coordinated with one another and in which the processes must mesh efficiently and as seamlessly as possible,” explains Alexander Kimpel. “Even if we end up producing a physical good, it is still the result of a largely digital process. And this process will only be efficient if everyone involved communicates cleanly with each other, is well informed at all times – and everyone can concentrate on their core area.”

To be able to control the digital process in its entirety, Schwab Offset decided to expand its in-house prepress department. It soon became clear that this would mean not only producing the printing plates, but above all performing all the preparatory digital work itself, thus optimizing the coordination processes with the pressroom.

“It soon became clear that we were missing professional tools that would enable us to optimally prepare the entire product mix. This was particularly true of the digital prepress stage, where all the information relating to the product comes together and where all content and quality adjustments for the subsequent printing process have to be made directly in the digital data.”

In his search for a suitable tool for editing the print images of complex maps with millions of elements as well as those of folding boxes and posters, Alexander Kimpel discovered the PDF editor PACKZ from HYBRID Software.

Alexander Kimpel remembers: “In the first step, we were looking for a pragmatic solution to make graphic processing in prepress more efficient and reliable. After a benchmark with HYBRID Software, it quickly became clear: this is exactly what we can achieve with PACKZ! But it was also clear to us that this would require a rethink and would mean a learning process. That’s why our users first qualified extensively and then successively introduced PACKZ into production. And we learned more in the process than we actually expected.”

It seems to be the typical experience of a digital transformation: once the starting signal has been given, one’s own perspective develops independently. Insights lead to new ideas, approaches to solutions are developed, revised and revised. The perception of one’s own process changes and rarely pauses.

“There are few topics in the company that are not close to my heart,” says Alexander Kimpel. “In a small company like ours, everyone is important and the cooperation between the individual departments is very close. So it’s obvious that I, in particular, as managing director, must have a stable basic knowledge in each area and must actively participate. It doesn’t matter whether it’s constructional issues such as water treatment, air humidification or machine planning. And I also wanted to “be involved” in the digital process. So now I’m pretty well-versed in IT infrastructure and I support my colleagues in the setup of our digital workflow.”

To improve interdepartmental processes and communication, Alexander Kimpel decided to implement CLOUDFLOW after the success with PACKZ. Several aspects played a role in this decision: “We had planned to centralize data management in the company in order to give everyone the opportunity to have a quick look at digital print data and also to be able to participate in quality control steps. At the same time, we wanted to reduce the risk of misunderstandings and mistakes. Thanks to CLOUDFLOW, we now have a direct link between processing, prepress and pressroom – everyone accesses a central platform. In addition to a noticeable increase in efficiency, this has also significantly improved understanding between departments. One now has more of an idea of what the other needs or can achieve.”

It’s no secret that family businesses can often create a very special bond with their customers. Schwab Offset is no exception, confirms Alexander Kimpel: “By introducing PACKZ and CLOUDFLOW, we can now offer our customers better service than before. We have become faster, more reliable and above all more transparent. In the next step, we will use CLOUDFLOW to integrate our customers directly into the digital process.”

But where is the digital transformation at Schwab Offset now? “Actually, it never really stops,” remarks the young managing director. “We’ve already come a long way, but we’re also aware that we’ve only just begun. But that’s certainly because the list of our ideas is growing almost daily and we see so many opportunities and possibilities that we would like to tackle. Therefore, I am glad to have found in HYBRID Software a partner who can serve us as a real sparring partner and with whom we can work constructively on a good, personal level on the development and implementation of our ideas.”

Finally, the question arises: will a managing director also have to master script programming in the future? Alexander Kimpel laughs: “This will probably remain a speciality, but as long as it gives me pleasure and I have the feeling that I can contribute something with it, I’m happy to do it!”

🏠 Working from home possibilities
💡 Excellent support and innovation

bryt Graphics Ltd. was looking for these possibilities and more before the pandemic, and to our pleasure chose us. We are happy to hear from them as they share that our trainings are keeping their skills and engagement high as well as creating solutions relevant for their customers.

Read their story:

Established in February 2020 bryt Graphics is a new business that is already rapidly securing a reputation for exceptional standards of service and quality. Collectively the newly assembled bryt Graphics team offers enviable levels of experience across such disciplines as brand management, labels, flexible and corrugated ensuring the customer experience is simple and hassle free.  The flexo platemaking sector is an extremely competitive one with a number of well established and recognisable names accounting for significant percentages of the market. Within this arena the bryt Graphics team are pushing the bar to new levels by working with selected partners and the latest technology to maximise efficiencies through every step of the process.

As a new business choosing the correct software to build a workflow infrastructure around is an extremely important decision. In selecting HYBRID Software for this key position bryt Graphics Ltd recognised a partner with similar values to our own and one that would be receptive and proactive in assisting them to create relevant and bespoke solutions for their clients. When setting up the business the management team at bryt were keen to acknowledge the benefits for their employees in a healthy work-life balance and as a result established a network to facilitate home working even before the recent pandemic forced other business to follow suit. One of the key concerns in operating such a system was ensuring the colleagues remained engaged and their skills did not stagnate. The online bootcamps, seminars and training provided by HYBRID addressed this concern directly and even allowed bryt to identify and unlock additional efficiencies within the process.

HYBRID is happy to share that our customer TADAM S.R.L., an Italian Flexo Service provider has reported some good news.

TADAM uses our CLOUDFLOW and PACKZ Software in processing their print work for corrugated, PVC, paper, and aluminum. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, they have re-organised their Maltignano office space, and have some employees working from home.

Thanks to CLOUDFLOW remote working, they can continue RIP printing effortlessly from home. 👏

We are happy to hear when HYBRID customers are doing well in these times! 💙  Today’s customer’s situation is a real silver lining despite the hard times we are facing.

LIC Packaging has ensured that there is constant instruction and training of line operators to ensure basic rules of co-working and hygiene are respected. In their assembly halls, shift times are modified to avoid overcrowding, and the number of people allowed at once in the canteen is limited.

Fortunately, PACKZ and CLOUDFLOW are allowing 6 of their 8 employees to work remotely and in safety and they are not facing any issues.

Thank you for being a loyal customer, Lic Packaging Spa!

Read their story:

LIC Packaging is located in Italy, and designs, industrialises and manufactures packaging solutions. Since the outbreak, the company has supplied constant instruction and training of line operators to ensure basic rules of co-working and hygiene are respected. Shift times are modified to avoid overcrowding, and the number of people allowed at once in the canteen is limited.

LIC Packaging is a loyal HYBRID customer: actually using only HYBRID products in their work processes. “Since we were using only HYBRID products even before the emergency, we continue to use them without any problems at this time.”

PACKZ and Cloudflow are allowing 6 of their 8 employees to work remotely and in safety. The Italian company are happy to report that the interaction between those in the office and at home is also working well. Additionally, LIC Packaging calls out the benefits of an online CLOUDFLOW, which abandons the waste of paper, allowing for uniform and standardised work, even from home.

28 April 2020 – (Gent, Belgium) Consumers are demanding sustainable, safe and healthy packaging. However, marketing and design are still very important. With the help of HYBRID Software’s CLOUDFLOW and PACKZ, O-I : EXPRESSIONS is building highly personalized, distinctive and beautiful glass packaging, building brands and driving consumer interest.

O-I : EXPRESSIONS, a service provided by O-I Glass Inc. (O-I) creates new marketing opportunities for brands through customization and personalization by sculpting glass bottles into multi-dimensional works of art, enabled by digital printing. They enable brands to create this packaging at flexible volumes, industrial speeds, and good value, with an unprecedented range of color and design possibilities, compared to traditional decoration solutions. O-I : EXPRESSIONS RELIEF, a premium offering, adds customized tactile effects, such as clear and color embossing.

A year and a half ago, when O-I : EXPRESSIONS began developing digital designing for glass packaging, their mandate was to collaborate with all their customers and employees within one multi-device platform—simple to use without requiring hours of training. O-I : EXPRESSIONS transitioned from a legacy paper-based system to a digital one, with the help of HYBRID Software’s flexible platform. There are no longer paper and exchanges of email, and fewer customer sales representative (CSR) calls. Using HYBRID CLOUDFLOW, O-I : EXPRESSIONS can leverage a cloud service and integrate new people into the system wherever they are within a day. A customer could be in Germany, the CSR in the UK, and production in France. They have online, two-way collaboration.

With HYBRID PACKZ, designers focus more on design, and less on repetitive tasks such as trapping, imposition, and color management. With a native PDF file format workflow decision makers can easily view a file, review it, and approve it before production.

With the new digital system, O-I: EXPRESSIONS can quickly create many different designs for review. They may not have empirical evidence of improved productivity yet, but their designers are managing an exponential increase of work. Meanwhile, others in the organization can learn how a colleague completed an interesting project elsewhere. Everyone will be able to see any project, have a backup, and receive 24/7 graphics design services. Customer assistance will be global.

“Variable data is a key feature in digital printing. My focus is the people. The technology lets our people add value,” explains Apostolos Pratos, Global Sales & Marketing Digital Transformation Leader. “For example, we have done some work sending car owners a personalized gift with their names. That was a small, manual project. We prefer an automated system. With HYBRID CLOUDFLOW and PACKZ, O-I : EXPRESSIONS designers can focus more on design, and less on the repetitive things.”

The Challenge
The high volume of orders coming from the web shop could not be processed efficiently because of the missing connections between the existing systems. Those were bridged by manual labour, resulting in redundant work, human errors and administrative cost.

The Solution
A central solution, connecting the existing systems and the production tasks. Users can control the complete process from estimation, order entry, prepress, online approval and production to shipping and invoicing in a single, web-based user interface.

The Benefit
Automation of repetitive work, simplification of complicated processes and elimination of redundant tasks takes out administrative cost and generates a faster throughput of orders, resulting in better press utilisation.

The Challenge
The different software packages for estimation, MIS, prepress workflow and planning were not completely integrated, so information had to be handled in different user interfaces and stored in several places. Item and product groups were not available.

The Solution
A single, company-wide software solution that consolidates the information from all departments, integrated with the existing MIS. With HYBRID Software, complex data workflows have been realised to optimise the production management.

The Benefit
The integration with MIS provides all relevant order information for the prepress workflow and leads to much higher automation. The early recognition of similar orders and their grouping facilitates production optimisation and reduces press downtime.
